IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Reading newspaper is very good habbit among our adults in the society. It is claimed that everybody will want to read online without paying in future instead of buiying newspapers and books. In my opinion,I have a mixed opinion on this topic and I will explain it briefly below.

From the begin, reading newspaper and books is very common among adults in our society. Our grandfathers like to reading newspapes and books sitting in streets, garden or even in home. It's our culture of reading these type of magzines.Adults do not like to read anything online.Because according to them,it can be negative effect on their health. They did not have any problem to pay for it. If they got their desired newspaper or book for reading then they pay for it happily without any hesitation. They liked to read it sitting with their friends and shared the information what they read.

On the other side, our young generation will exchange it with online reading. Because, they willl not like to search to for books and magzines if they will have complete access to every book and newspaper in the future. Simply, they will try take their desired book online and read it without paying any cost. According to me, this habbit will have littlle bit negative effect on youngsters in future. the effect is that they will forgot their ancestors habbit of reading magzines and enjoying with their friends.

To conclude, everybody should need to recognise their ancestor's culture of reading physically. But,if they need to take information about anything online then it should used.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a recognisable mixed position: older adults may continue buying print, while younger people may prefer free online reading. This is relevant to the question, and the contrast gives your response a basic line of argument. However, the extent of your agreement is not stated precisely; “I have a mixed opinion” does not explain whether you think printed publications will disappear or simply become less popular. The discussion also focuses mainly on habits and cultural effects, with little explanation of why people might choose print or online access, and the final paragraph does not resolve the prediction in the prompt. Develop each side with specific reasons and make your overall judgement explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph about older readers, a contrasting paragraph about younger people, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the other side” help signal the shift in viewpoint, so the reader can follow the main contrast. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the first body paragraph moves from reading habits to health concerns, payment, and socialising without clearly linking these points. Connectors such as “Because” are also used to begin standalone sentences, and “To conclude” introduces a conclusion that mostly repeats the cultural point rather than bringing the argument together. Use clearer links between reasons and examples, and make the conclusion directly answer the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “online reading,” “newspaper,” “book,” and “culture of reading.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “without any hesitation” and “negative effect on their health.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or repetitive choices make the writing less natural, including “exchange it with online reading,” “take their desired book online,” and repeated use of “habbit.” Spelling errors such as “newspapes,” “magzines,” and “littlle” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish between “replace print with digital reading” and “access a book online.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including conditional forms such as “if they got their desired newspaper or book” and a contrast between generations. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but control is inconsistent: several complex sentences are faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries recur. Examples include “adults like to reading,” “they willl not like,” “they will forgot,” and “it should used.” There are also run-on or fragmented constructions, such as “Adults do not like to read anything online. Because according to them…” Practise accurate verb patterns and build longer sentences around one clear main clause, using punctuation to separate complete ideas.
