IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is predicted that the value of printed newspapers or books will decrease in the the future due to availabilty of online service which costs nothing. I completely agree with this context as the modern era brings down many advances in technology and software so everything is easily available now on internet and there is no need to pay a single penny.

In the past, printed newspapers had a key role in everyone's life and the people had developed a habit of reading printed newspapers in the early morning to become aware of the political and financial situation of the country and they had to pay a small amount of money for buying printed newspapers. Books were available in libraries but the librarian discharged some fixed amount from the readers or the people had to pay a fixed amount in order to took their desired books along with their homes. But the world has achieved great improvements in both technological and social media sectors by considering financial resources of the community. Almost every kind of newspaper or book is now easily accessible online and we just need to add our email address to login just to gain access so, in the future the huge community of people will shift to online facility. On the other hand, people can easily find out their desired newspaper or book online without searching for hours so people will prefer this time efficient resource in the upcoming years.

I personally agree that people will surely divert their habits of buying printed newspapers or books and will start searching for the online availability of these items in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you completely agree that online access will replace buying printed material, and you give relevant reasons, including convenience and the time saved when searching online. The historical comparison with newspapers and library books also helps explain the change. However, the response mainly asserts that online material is free and widely available rather than developing this claim with specific support. It does not consider a counterpoint, such as readers who value print or paid subscriptions and copyright restrictions, which would make the discussion more balanced even while maintaining your position. The conclusion repeats your view but adds little. Develop fewer points in greater depth and clarify how free online access will apply to both newspapers and books.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction states your view, the main paragraph contrasts past and present, and the final paragraph restates your position. The sequence from printed reading habits to online convenience is generally easy to follow. However, nearly all supporting material is placed in one long paragraph, so the comparison, reasons, and prediction are not clearly separated. Some linking is mechanical or imprecise: “On the other hand” introduces another supporting reason rather than a contrast, and “so” is used repeatedly to connect claims. Organise the body into focused paragraphs and use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas. Clearer referencing would also help readers follow what “these items” refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “political and financial situation,” “accessible online,” and “time efficient,” which helps communicate your main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “technological and social media sectors,” though this expression is unclear and does not fit the intended meaning precisely. Several word choices and collocations are unnatural, including “the value … will decrease,” “discharged some fixed amount,” and “divert their habits.” Spelling errors such as “availabilty” and “internet” (when used as a proper noun) also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “the popularity of print will decline” and “pay a fee”; proofread spelling and avoid inflated phrases when a simpler expression is clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “newspapers or books … which costs nothing” and a time clause beginning “to become aware.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “in the the future” repeats the article, “the people had developed” uses an unnecessary article, and “in order to took” has an incorrect verb form; use “in order to take.” The sentence beginning “Books were available in libraries” also shifts between past and present reference, making the timeline less controlled. Long sentences joined by several clauses are prone to errors. Practise accurate verb patterns, articles, and tense consistency, and divide overloaded sentences to improve control.
