IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Expensiveness is increasing a lot and buying newspapers or books takes one's income which if he did not buy and can spend on something important and at the same time the knowledge which he was seeking by buying, he can have the access of that knowledge online for free so it is a kind of win win situation for him. I believe in the coming time people will experience extreme inflation and for that purposes we have to find alternatives of the things which we are using. This is the story of one side of coin, the other side of the coin are the one's doing businesses of printed books and newspapers, If nobody will buy from them their businesses will shut down, and the source of income for them will be gone and it is not a small number there are a lot of people who are doing this business, so what can they do, should they shut it down, No, The solution for them is that they should not stop printing, It is true that everything is available on internet but this is also true that digital screens are the reason of eye ache and damaging eyes, so people will eventually never stop buying printed books and newspapers the change that will take place is they will smartly buy, Some books and newspapers printed the one's that he thinks that is the valuable and can read again and again but the information which he will read only for once he can read that online, So i agree and also disagree at the same statement it will happen but it will not erase the existence of printed books and newspapers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both sides of the claim and give a qualified position: online access may reduce purchases, but printed books and newspapers will not disappear. The points about saving money, employment in print businesses, and eye strain are relevant. However, the position is not consistently clear: “I agree and also disagree” does not specify which part of the prediction you accept, and the conclusion mainly repeats this uncertainty. Several ideas are asserted rather than explained—for example, the claim that inflation will make people seek alternatives, and that eye strain will ensure continued print sales. State your degree of agreement directly, then develop each main reason with a specific explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable progression from the financial case for online reading to the effects on print businesses and the continued appeal of paper. Phrases such as “the other side of the coin” signal a shift in viewpoint. However, the essay is presented as one very long paragraph, so the stages of the argument are difficult to distinguish. Several linking expressions are repetitive or awkward, and the extended sentence beginning “This is the story of one side of coin” carries many ideas without clear boundaries. Use separate paragraphs for the online advantages, reasons print may remain, and your conclusion. Shorter sentences and clearer transitions would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “printed books and newspapers,” “source of income,” “digital screens,” and “inflation,” and the reader can generally understand your main points. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “Expensiveness is increasing a lot,” “takes one's income,” and “eye ache.” Repetition of “buy,” “books,” and “newspapers” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary how you refer to the topic—for example, distinguish between the cost of print publications, online access, and the publishing industry. More accurate phrasing would help communicate your ideas smoothly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt complex sentences to connect causes and consequences, but these are often difficult to control. The opening sentence contains a long, unclear clause (“which if he did not buy and can spend”), while the sentence beginning “If nobody will buy from them” combines several ideas with comma splices and inconsistent capitalisation. There are also errors in agreement and sentence structure, as in “the other side of the coin are,” and the final sentence joins contrasting points without clear punctuation. These problems sometimes make the reader work to identify the relationships between ideas. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and use full stops to separate complete thoughts.
