IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that in the coming time, No one will purchase printed newspapers and books as they will be able to access those resources for free online, I partially agree with this statement and I think that alot of books require practical learning which cannot be done through internet and may result in lack of practical experience.
Newspapers are becoming less popular nowadays as a lot of users have shifted towards the social media and digital world, they are able to get more informative documentries online from where they are able to visualize and see more about the current situations, as the world is advancing, people often dislike newspapers and are more dependent on social media making it their primary means of information, for example, my dad who was once fond of reading newspapers, have now completely abondoned it and shifted to mobile phones to get an idea about the current world situations.
In the contrast, I personally think that a lot of people enjoy reading printed books because it can be less stressing on eyes. A lot of people find it difficut to read something from a screen rather than a book, moreover, a book also provides you a sense of clarity and reminds you about different tasks without any distraction, whereas, there are alot of distractions and ads online which can affect our focus and ultimately, one can loose his focus and progress. In addition, one can also make good notes on his book practically which can help him with practical work.
In conclusion, I personally think that in the coming years, people will fully abandon newspapers, while a large proportion of individuals will be unable to replace books with online resources because of the practical work involved in it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is identifiable: you partly agree, expecting newspapers to disappear while printed books remain useful. You address both formats and give relevant reasons, including screen-related eye strain, online distractions, and the practical value of books. The example about your father also supports the shift away from newspapers. However, the opening claim that books require practical learning is unclear, and the later point about making notes does not fully explain why online resources cannot replace books. The discussion of free online access is also not examined directly. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely which kinds of books need physical use and develop the contrast between newspapers and books with clearer, more specific support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, separate paragraphs on newspapers and books, and a conclusion that restates your position. This logical arrangement helps the reader follow the main contrast, and linking expressions such as “In addition” and “In conclusion” make the progression visible. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The first body paragraph combines several related claims in a long sentence, while the second moves from eye strain to clarity, distractions, and note-taking without fully showing how each point connects. “In the contrast” is also an awkward transition. Use clearer topic sentences and divide long sentences so that each paragraph develops one main reason in a more deliberate sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including phrases such as “primary means of information,” “sense of clarity,” and “practical experience.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “visualize” and “abandoned.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, and spelling errors are noticeable: “documentries,” “abondoned,” “difficut,” and “loose” (where “lose” is intended). Repetition of “a lot of” and “people” also limits variety. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, describe readers as “relying on digital media” rather than “dependent on social media” when discussing news access.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “whereas,” and “which,” and your meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in long sentences. The opening sentence joins a complete statement and your opinion with a comma, creating a run-on structure. In “my dad … have now completely,” the verb does not agree with the singular subject; “a book … it can be less stressing” also shifts awkwardly between singular and plural reference. There are article and phrasing problems in “In the contrast,” and punctuation is often insufficient where ideas are joined. Break complex sentences into clearer units and check agreement and pronoun reference.
