IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that printed newspapers or books will no longer be popular in the future because people can read them online for free. I partly agree with this statement because online reading is becoming more popular due to it's convenience and free access. However, I believe that some people will continue to buy printed newspapers and books because they prefer reading in traditional ways.

There are several reasons why I agree with this view is that online reading is becoming popular. This is because online reading offers a wide variety of access without paying. As a result, they can get enough information by staying at home. They may not need to travel to shops to buy newspapers or books. This can saves them both time and money. For example, a student can read a wide range of books using E-book without visiting bookshops. Similarly, a person can read online newspapers to stay informed about the current affairs. This can not only make their lives easier but also reduce their physical effort required to buy newspapers and books.

On the other hand, i also believe that printed newspaper and books will still have some readers in the future despite the growing popularity of online reading. This is because some people enjoy reading physical books and newspapers as they can touch the pages and turn them while reading. It gives them a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment. It also help them feel relaxed and refreshed. Moreover, reading physical books may help them concentrate better, which can be difficult when reading online. Furthermore, some people also concerned about their eye health because reading on digital screens for a long time can causes eye strain. Consequently, they may choose printed newspapers or physical books instead of online books.

In conclusion, although online reading makes people's lives much easier, I believe that some people will still enjoy reading physical newspapers and books as they love the feelings of holding a book and turning the pages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you partly agree that free online access will reduce demand, while expecting some people to keep buying print. You address both sides and support them with relevant examples, including students accessing e-books and readers preferring the feel of physical pages. This meets the task well, and the explanation of convenience is reasonably developed. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explored: for instance, the claim that print helps concentration and protects eye health would be stronger with a clearer explanation of why this leads people to purchase books or newspapers. Develop the implications of your examples more fully to make the argument consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting online reading, a contrasting paragraph about print, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the progression. The contrast between convenience and the sensory experience of print is also easy to identify. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated “This is because” and “This can” constructions. Some references are not fully clear, such as “they” in “they can get enough information,” where the reader must infer that it means people. Varying transitions and making references more explicit would make the cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “free access,” “current affairs,” “sense of satisfaction,” and “eye strain.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and you attempt some topic-specific language such as “digital screens” and “physical books.” However, several phrases are imprecise or awkwardly combined, including “a wide variety of access,” “using E-book,” and “the feelings of holding a book.” There is also repetition of “online reading,” “books,” and “newspapers,” which limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise alternatives, while checking word forms and capitalization. This would help express familiar ideas with greater accuracy and variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “although,” and “which,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled well, such as “Moreover, reading physical books may help them concentrate better, which can be difficult when reading online.” However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “This can saves” should be “This can save,” and “It also help them” should be “It also helps them.” In “some people also concerned,” the verb “are” is missing, while “can causes” should be “can cause.” There are also inconsistent capital letters at the start of sentences. Proofreading agreement, verb forms, and sentence openings would improve accuracy.
