IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is projected that, paper based reading sources will be vanished in the future. I strictly agree with that, the online version of newspapers and books will be available soon without charging.

The modern electronic devices and easy access of internet made it possible for us to find the soft copy of reading materials through online. Firstly, internet is now well developed, which can reply any question and by the help of search engine, finding a book in online became the easiest thing. While one need a book to read, he or she can download the pdf form of the book from the internet browser. In addition, the smart phone companies updated their notification system, which can provide news within a single moment. For example; while a news information founded, people got a immediate notification from news channel. Therefore, people do not have to wait for the next day newspaper.

On the other hand , the easy access of getting information discouraged people to buy hard copies of newspaper. While one can easily get the exact information from online platforms, he or she might not be interested in purchasing newspapers or books. Online media provides the data without any cost, although online system is not only costless but also time efficient. Therefore, if people can read the same content without any cost, they will not purchase this. Furthermore, reading something in online devices can save the valuable time, and reader do not have to tension about carrying books. For instance; while someone feels bored in traffic jam, he or she can spend the time by reading pdf book on smartphone without carrying printed papers.

In conclusion, enough source of online media or software will be available in future, which can be published information without any cost and in a short time period. Therefore, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening—“I strictly agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central prediction by explaining how online access, search engines, and instant news notifications could reduce demand for printed material. The examples about downloading a book and reading on a phone in traffic also support your view. However, the discussion focuses mainly on convenience and cost, and some claims are asserted rather than fully explained. The prompt specifically predicts that people will be able to read everything online without paying; you could examine whether all books and newspapers will actually be free, and acknowledge a counterpoint such as readers’ preference for print. Developing these aspects would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The first body paragraph explains online access and speed, while the second links these advantages to reduced purchasing, so the main progression is understandable. You also use signposts such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “Therefore.” At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. For example, “On the other hand” suggests a contrasting view, but the paragraph continues to support your agreement. Some references, such as “this” in “they will not purchase this,” are also imprecise. Use transitions that reflect the actual relationship between points and make each paragraph’s central claim explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “soft copy,” “search engine,” “hard copies,” “costless,” and “time efficient,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts to use more formal expressions, such as “projected” and “valuable time.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “paper based reading sources,” “a news information,” and “enough source of online media.” These choices sometimes make the meaning less fluent, even though the reader can generally understand your ideas. Aim to learn vocabulary in natural combinations and check whether a noun is countable or whether a phrase is idiomatic. More precise terms for digital access and the decline in print purchasing would strengthen the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “which,” “while,” and “although.” This allows you to explain causes and give examples, and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. For instance, “the modern electronic devices and easy access of internet made” has problems with article use and agreement, while “people got a immediate notification” uses an incorrect article and verb form. In “reader do not have to tension,” the subject and sentence pattern are not controlled. Review articles and singular/plural agreement, and proofread each sentence for a complete, natural grammatical structure. More accurate complex sentences would improve clarity.
