IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The trend of reading online has become increasingly common in modern society, as technology advances the reading habbits of indviduals, shaping the ways how people live. I partially agree that the trend of reading online will advances, however, the buying of hard newspapers and books will be limited in future, not vanish completely.
On the one hand, nobody will purchase newspapers or books in the future due to miracles of technology, as technology advances, younger generation is adapting digital devices, streaming platforms, and social media. Whereas, the older adults who have less interest in technological devices will be stick to printed newspapers or books. For instance, the older people who are not familiar with digital platforms will use printed form of reading material. Ultimately, the future of reading is limited for hard books or newspapers.
On the other hand, Individuals studying or doing professional work are stick to online platforms. Everything is online now-a-days such as online classes for kids, lecture for students doing professional degrees like engineering and mbbs. For example, many students in mbbs study from tablets and ipads because they

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You state a recognisable position: online reading will grow, but printed newspapers and books will not disappear completely. The contrast between younger readers adopting digital media and older adults preferring print is relevant, and the examples of students using tablets begin to support your discussion. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not explain whether online material will be free, a central part of the prompt, and the second body paragraph is unfinished. The claim that “nobody will purchase” print also conflicts with your position that some older people will continue using it. At 182 words, the response is below the required 250, leaving your reasons and conclusion insufficiently developed. Develop both sides and state your extent of agreement consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic essay shape, with an introduction and two body paragraphs, and “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” signal a contrast. The main ideas are generally relevant and can be followed. However, progression is limited: the first body paragraph repeats the idea that older people will use print, while the second shifts to online study without completing its example or linking it clearly to whether printed books will disappear. The response also ends abruptly, with no conclusion to restate your position. Some connections are awkward, such as “Whereas” beginning a sentence without a complete contrast structure. Organise each paragraph around one developed reason, use clear links between examples and claims, and finish with a concise conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “digital devices,” “streaming platforms,” “professional work,” and “printed form of reading material,” which helps communicate the general subject. There are also attempts at more specific terms such as “technological devices.” However, the range is uneven, and several inaccurate or unnatural choices reduce precision: “reading habbits,” “hard newspapers,” and “the trend … will advances.” Spelling errors such as “indviduals” and “now-a-days” are noticeable, while repeated use of “online,” “technology,” and “future” limits variety. Choose standard collocations such as “printed newspapers” and “digital reading,” and check spelling and word forms. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish access to free online content from the broader shift to digital reading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a subordinate clause in “because they will be able to read everything” and a contrast introduced by “On the one hand.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. For example, “I partially agree … will advances” has an incorrect verb form, and “the older adults … will be stick to” uses an incorrect verb construction. The opening sentence also joins clauses awkwardly with a comma, and “younger generation is adapting” lacks clear article and agreement control. The final sentence is incomplete. Use shorter, complete sentences when needed, check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and proofread punctuation so that complex ideas remain clear.
