IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People argued that no one will purchase printed newspapers or books because they can get easily everything that they want online without need to pay anything. I mostly agree that in the future people will read everything using their tabs, mobile phones rather than purchasing printed materials because of the following two reasons: get information easily and an environment friendly approach.
To begin with, one of the most important reason why everyone will start to read everything they want in digital devices is that they can get updated information easily. We live in a world where technology is changing rapidly. We continuously invent new technology which make our life easy. For example, the discovery of google makes our life smooth, efficient, and productive. We can get easily everything from google. We don't need any more printed materials to gain some information. And this allows us to have updated information quickly from any corner of the world. For example, a person has a subscription of a magazine called the " Daily Star". This magazine publishes every event that happen all over the world. And the person get easily those information without any delay.
In addition, reading everything online is also an environment friendly approach. Because we know that paper is being made from trees, and every year a significant number of trees have been cut just to provide necessary raw materials of making paper. So when people will start to read everything online, this practice of cutting down trees will no longer be needed. Consequently carbon emisions will be lower compared with the past, the world will be less warmer and make the world habitable.
However, there are some drawbacks of this trend. In order to read online, at first we need access to online using digital devices. But this becomes difficult for people from third world country where people live below the poverty line. They don't have any kind of digital devices. That's why it is not possible for them to read online. Apart from that, they also don't know how to use technology. So it will be quite challenging for them to use technology properly.
In conclusion, reading online has some limitations due to lacking of knowledge and financial hardship. In my opinion, the trend of reading online will be very popular in the future because of its flexibility, getting information easily and environmental benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you mostly agree that online reading will replace printed materials, and you address both the advantages and a limitation. The points about quick access to current information and reducing paper use are relevant, with examples such as Google and a magazine subscription. This meets the task well overall. However, some support is general or not fully explained: the claim that online reading will make the world “less warmer” needs a clearer link to emissions, and the example of the magazine does not show specifically how it replaces a printed copy. The concern about people without devices is relevant, but could be weighed more directly against your prediction. More precise development of these points would make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, a counterpoint, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “However” help readers follow the argument, and the conclusion returns to your position. This is a coherent arrangement. At times, though, linking feels mechanical, particularly with repeated “For example” and “And” at the start of sentences. Some references are also unclear, as in “this practice” and “those information,” so the reader has to infer exactly what they refer to. Try combining closely related sentences and using clearer references, while ensuring each paragraph develops one main point in a more continuous progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “updated information,” “digital devices,” “financial hardship,” and “environmental benefits,” so your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “raw materials” and “habitable.” However, the range and control are uneven, with repeated general words such as “everything,” “easy,” and “information,” and several unnatural combinations: “get easily everything,” “an environment friendly approach,” and “a person has a subscription of a magazine.” Spelling errors such as “emisions” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated wording; this would make the argument sound more natural and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a world where technology is changing rapidly” and a conditional structure beginning “when people will start to read everything online.” The overall meaning remains clear, and the paragraphing gives you opportunities to show a range of structures. However, some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction remain. For example, “one of the most important reason” needs plural agreement, while “every event that happen” and “the person get” have incorrect verb forms. “Because we know that paper…” is a fragment, and “when people will start” is not the appropriate tense pattern after “when.” Review these patterns and aim for more consistently accurate complex sentences.
