IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people have the options to gain knowledge and news from multiple resources with the advancement in technology. Some people acknowledge that people would completely stop purchasing printed newspaper or books as they can get information online without spending money. I partially agree with this statement primarily because of the large amount of distractions and the convenience of reading news from their mobile phones.
On one hand, online reading is accompanied by significant distractions such as notifications from social media platforms such facebook and instagram. Consequently, individuals lose focus while reading a specific piece of information and end up in doom - scrolling. Moreover, large category of people are having this new craze for having things physically with themselves. For instance, some people value and love to keep books they read with themselves as a a part of emotional attachment towards it. Therefore, distractions involved in reading content digitally force people to prefer buying printed newspapers or books.
On the other hand, digital reading offers the convenience of reading from mobile phones which are always accessible to them. Internet have multiple reliable sources for getting information in concise manner and people can even filter the content as per their interest. In addition, digital newspapers and books are often free of cost which can contribute in saving a good share of money. For instance, people who want to get updates regarding sports can directly follow their online pages and receive information without having to spend on money on newspapers. Thus, online reading have the potential to become popular in future as it provides the convenience of receiving information at your finger tips.
In conclusion, although online reading can significantly grow in the future because of major convenience it provides, distractions while using phones stand as barrier for this. Hence, I partially agree with the statement that nobody will buy printed things for reading in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you partially agree, and the essay addresses both the reasons printed materials may remain popular and the advantages of online reading. The examples about emotional attachment to physical books and following sports updates online are relevant. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The point about digital distractions is explained through notifications and scrolling, but the link to people choosing to buy printed newspapers could be made more explicit. Likewise, the claim that online sources are reliable is asserted rather than supported. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how each reason affects future purchasing, and develop the conclusion beyond repeating your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from disadvantages of digital reading to its convenience is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some control of paragraphing. At times, however, linking feels mechanical, particularly with repeated “Therefore,” “Thus” and “Hence.” Some references are also imprecise: “this” in “this new craze” and “it” in “emotional attachment towards it” require the reader to infer the intended meaning. Use a wider range of natural links and make references explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for the topic and attempt some less common expressions, including “significant distractions,” “emotional attachment,” “filter the content” and “concise manner.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and errors generally do not prevent understanding. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “large category of people,” “spend on money,” and “at your finger tips.” There are also spelling and form issues in “facebook” and “instagram,” which should be capitalised, and “doom - scrolling,” which is normally written as one hyphenated term. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while” and “although.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “people have the options” has an unnecessary plural ending, “Internet have” needs subject–verb agreement, and “online reading have” should also agree with its singular subject. Articles and determiners are sometimes missing or repeated, as in “large category of people” and “as a a part.” The sentence beginning “Moreover” also shifts awkwardly between “people” and “themselves.” Review agreement, articles and pronoun reference, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
