IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

IN THIS RAPIDLY RISING DIGITAL WORLD, THE USE OF INTERNET AND MODERN TECHNOLOGY HAS BECOME INCREAINGLY PREVALENT. IN FUTURE, IT IS EXPECTED THAT PEOPLE WILL SELDOM PURCHASE BOOKS, MAGAZINES AND PRINTED NEWSPAPERS FOR READING BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL BE ABLE TO READ THESE ARTICLES ONLINE WITHOUT SPENDING A SINGLE PENNY. I DISAGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT WITH CERTAIN FACTS LIKE CREATIVITY, SATISFACTION, AND FLEXIBILITY.

IN MY OPINION, MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN FUTURE WILL READ PRINTED BOOKS AND MAGAZINES BECAUSE THEY NEED CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR READING ONLINE. FIRSTLY, THEY NEED A GOOD INTERNET CONECTION IF THEY WANT TO READ FROM MOBILE PHONE OR LAPTOP. MOREOVER, THEY SHOULD NECESSARILY HAVE MOBILE PHONE WITH THEM. FOR EXAMPLE, IT DOES NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO READ BOOKS AND NEWSPAPERS DUE TO LACK OF MOBILE PHONE. ADDITIONALLY, IT ALSO HARSHLY AFFECTS THE EYE-SIGHT OF READER IF HE WANT TO READ BOOKS ONLINE. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE MAINLY LESS RESTRICTIONS ON BOOKS THAN MOBILE PHONE AND ANY OTHER GADGET IN PUBLIC PLACES SUCH AS LIBRARY, PARK, AND COLLEGES AS WELL.

READING ONLINE ALSO HAS SOME ADVANTAGES SUCH AS EASY TO ACCESS AND AFFORDABLE WAY OF LEARNING SOMETHING BUT READING PRINTED PAPERS PROVIDE MORE NATURAL FEELINGS AND RELIABILITY. FURTHERMORE, IT IS OFTEN ADVISED TO READ BOOKS PHYSICALLY RATHER THAN ONLINE. SOME PEOPLE OFTEN FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WHILE READING BOOKS ON SCREEN. READING PRINTED BOOKS GIVES MORE SATISFACTION AND INTEREST IN LEARNING AND READING WITH DEVOTION AND CONCENTRATION. FOR INSTANCE, THE READER CAN EASILY HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT KEY FEATURES AND PIN POINTS WHEN HE IS READING HARDCOPY.

IN CONCLUTION, IT IS EXPECTED THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE, MAINLY THOSE WHO ARE ADDDICTED TO READ PRINTED BOOKS, WILL NOT SWITCH TO ONLINE READING BUT THEY WILL CONTINUE READING PRINTED BOOKS AND NEWSPAPERS.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree that free online access will eliminate printed reading, and you give relevant reasons, including access to devices, eye strain, comfort, and the satisfaction of handling a book. The examples about children and highlighting a hard copy help connect these points to the topic. However, some parts are less fully addressed than others. The claim that printed books offer “creativity” is introduced but not explained, and the point about fewer restrictions in public places is difficult to follow. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or specific example, and address more directly why people will continue to buy printed newspapers and books despite free online alternatives.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” make the progression easy to follow, and the example about highlighting a hard copy supports the paragraph’s focus. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and a generally logical sequence. At times, however, linking feels mechanical, with several points introduced by similar additive markers. The connection between needing a device and children being unable to read, and the point about restrictions in public places, could be made more explicit. Use clearer references and vary how you connect explanations and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “printed books,” “online,” “eye-sight,” “concentration,” and “hardcopy,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “natural feelings” and “read with devotion.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “rapidly rising digital world,” “good internet connection,” “pin points,” and “addicted to read” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “increaingly,” “conclution,” and “adddicted” are also noticeable. Build accuracy by learning common word partnerships and checking spelling, while choosing precise terms rather than relying on broad phrases such as “some advantages.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause (“if they want to read from mobile phone or laptop”) and a relative clause (“which he is reading hardcopy”). Most sentences communicate the intended point, and the response is not limited to one sentence pattern. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and verb forms. For example, “the use of internet” needs an article before “internet,” “printed papers provide” should agree with the intended noun phrase, and “if he want” requires subject–verb agreement. “Most of the people in future” also needs a more natural grammatical construction. Review articles and agreement, and proofread sentence patterns so these errors occur less often.
