IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the future people will stop buying printed Newspapers and books because they will be able to get every information they want online without paying. This statement is very accurate and i agree to a larger extent with it because smartphones has made books and newspapers accessible to everyone and also it is easier to search for information online.
Firstly, having a smartphone has made it plausible for people to download and access any information they need online at any point in time. Individuals who are professionals and engage in 9-5 works and even businessmen and women may find it very difficult to rush out to newspaper stand or bookshop early in the morning to purchase one or two books or newspaper but with the smartphones handy, one can quickly download a book or newspaper of their choice and quickly peruse through it to read and get any information they need. Also, the adobe reader and WPX office has made it possible to save and download books for later.
Secondly, it is easy to search for information online. This is because applications like the google, microsft, forefox etc even the use of AI has made searching online seamless. Any information needed is typed in and within seconds the answers are at your fingertips.
Although, most individuals may find reading online difficult because of eyes problem or other preferences, I still believe and strongly agree that reading information online in the future will stop people from buying newspapers and books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you agree to a large extent, and both main points—smartphone access and faster online searching—are relevant to the claim. The examples of downloading books and using search applications help explain your view. However, the discussion is brief and largely asserts convenience rather than fully examining whether people will be able to read everything online without paying. The concession about eye problems and personal preferences is introduced but not developed, and the response does not address the possibility that some online content may still require payment. The response is also one word below the required minimum. Develop the counterpoint and explain more directly how free access could replace purchases to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction stating your view, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a concluding concession and restatement. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Although” make the progression easy to follow. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations and shows some effective organisation. To make the progression more consistently smooth, avoid relying mainly on these basic signposts and connect each example explicitly to the claim. For instance, the long first body paragraph moves from workers’ schedules to downloading and then saving files; clearer sentence breaks and links would make those steps easier to follow. The final paragraph would also work better if the concession were explained before you show why it does not change your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “download,” “accessible,” “search for information,” and “at your fingertips.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “peruse through it” and “seamless.” However, the range is limited and some choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “every information,” “9-5 works,” and “the google, microsft, forefox” reduce precision. Capitalisation and spelling errors in “Newspapers,” “i,” “microsft,” and “forefox” are noticeable. Aim for accurate collocations and a more formal register, and vary repeated words such as “information” and “online.” These improvements would make your meaning more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “Individuals who are professionals…” and a concession beginning “Although.” Most of the message remains understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “smartphones has made” should use a plural verb, while “the adobe reader and WPX office has made” has a compound subject requiring a plural verb. The sentence beginning “Individuals who are professionals” is overloaded and contains awkward grammatical patterns, and “Although, most individuals…” incorrectly separates the conjunction with a comma. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and breaking long sentences into controlled clauses; this will help you use complex structures more reliably.
