IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been an ongoing debate whether people will purchase digital books and newspapers in the future instead of printed ones. I find myself in complete disagreement with this viewpoint, since there are still a large number of people who would still want to use printed products.

On the one hand, there are many reasons why books and newspapers in digital platforms are becoming more preferable among users. First of all, with the advancement of technology, notably the Internet, users would have more opportunity to gain access to the great resource of digital books and newspapers. What is more, most of them are free to use, so people would have free access to these products, without paying an extra amount of money. Second of all, the use of digital books and newspapers means people would not need to keep a storage of those printed ones. In that way, they would reduce a great amount of space.

On the other hand, there are various reasons why printed books and newspapers are still choosen by many people. Firstly, despite being in the digital age, books lovers would rather purchased a printed edition of their favorite novels or newspapers. A good example of this are avid readers, who would spend a large amount of money possessing books that are of limited editions. These products would give them a better sense of belongings. Secondly, readers consider printed books to have a deeper meaning to them. It can either be a present given by their beloved ones, or a novel that had the signature of their favorite author. These emotions and experience cannot be replaced by the possession of digital textbooks.

In conclusion, there has been an opinion stating that online books and newspapers are becoming more preferable. However, I disagree with this viewpoint because of the values that printed textbooks have on their owners.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you “completely disagree” that printed publications will disappear, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both sides by explaining the convenience and low cost of digital reading, then giving reasons people may continue to value print, including limited editions and personal associations. These are relevant points, but they are not equally developed. The digital-side points are mostly general, while the examples about collecting books and receiving a signed novel make the print argument more concrete. Also, the prompt concerns whether nobody will buy print because online material is free; clarify that your disagreement is about continued demand, rather than implying that digital formats are simply becoming more popular. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from digital advantages to reasons for retaining print is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the repeated sequencing phrases “First of all,” “What is more,” “Second of all,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” make the links somewhat mechanical. Some references are also imprecise: “These products” could refer to limited editions or printed books generally, and “These emotions and experience” does not clearly connect to the preceding examples. Use more varied transitions and make references explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “advancement of technology,” “limited editions,” “avid readers,” and “sense of belongings.” These choices help express ideas about access, collecting, and emotional value, and the meaning is generally clear. You also attempt less common expressions, though some are inaccurate or unnatural: “books in digital platforms” and “a storage of those printed ones” do not collocate naturally, while “a deeper meaning to them” is vague. There are also word-form or spelling slips, such as “choosen” and “belongings.” Aim for precise, natural combinations rather than adding complexity: for example, refer to books “available online” and to “storage space.” This would make your vocabulary more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “since there are still a large number of people…” and the relative clause “who would spend a large amount of money…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. For example, “books lovers would rather purchased” needs a base verb after “would rather,” and “A good example of this are avid readers” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “It can either be a present… or a novel…,” the pronoun’s reference is unclear, and “These emotions and experience” has a number mismatch. Review verb patterns, agreement, and pronoun reference, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
