IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people think that printed newspapers and physical books will be replaced totally since people can access free version online books or journals from internet. While digital media grows rapidly and more dominant nowadays, I think phyiscal books will still be popular among people because of its unique traditions.
On the one hand, it is generally accept that online books are convenience. Digital platforms and e-books readers allow users to download books instantly without physical delivery delays. For instance, people can buys e-books from Amazon or other websites and read it with their own devices. In addition to it, digital users reduce daily paper consumption, and save the environment. For example, if paper consumptions high, significant amount of bamboos need to cut-off, as a result, people will suffer environmental effects.
On the other hand, printed books offer unique value of physical media. Some older demorgraphic finds it difficult to read on their own phones or laptops. Physical books and newspapers do not cause digital eye constraints, and no distractions from online. For instance, online ads can appear while people concertrate on reading, consequently, they cannot catch attentions for a longer period. Furthermore, quality news and journals require funding to sustain their organisations. People also cannot trust completely on online news because some news can be inaccurate, and journalisms and editors need to check prior before they announce those news to public.
To conclude, printed newspapers and books may reduce market share, and decrease in production, however, it cannot vanish entirely. Instead, they will release news from paid subscription systems or free-ads reading styles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: although digital reading is convenient and can reduce paper use, you believe printed publications will not disappear. You address both sides and give relevant examples, including instant e-book access, reading difficulties for some older people, and concerns about online news reliability. This meets the task well. To make the response more fully developed, explain more directly why these points mean people will continue buying printed books or newspapers; for example, the discussion of funding and inaccurate news does not clearly establish why print will remain preferable. The conclusion also introduces paid subscriptions and advertising without explaining how these models support the survival of printed media. More precise links between each reason and your position would strengthen the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the main stages easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The environmental example moves from paper use to bamboo and then to “environmental effects” without fully explaining the link, while the point about funding shifts to online news accuracy without a clear transition. References such as “those news” are also not always clear. Aim to organise each body paragraph around one main reason, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point. This would make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “digital platforms,” “physical media,” “paper consumption,” and “paid subscription systems.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more specific vocabulary are evident. However, some word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “digital eye constraints,” “catch attentions,” “older demorgraphic,” and “physical books” misspellings or awkward expressions make parts less natural. “Free version online books” is also unclear. Choose established collocations and check word forms and spelling carefully; for example, describe eye discomfort as “eye strain” and say that readers “maintain their concentration.” This would make your vocabulary more accurate and flexible while preserving the clear meaning of your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause in “While digital media grows rapidly…” and conditional structures in the environmental example. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “it is generally accept” instead of “it is generally accepted,” “people can buys” instead of “people can buy,” and “people can access free version” without an article or plural form. There are also agreement and sentence-construction problems, such as “it cannot vanish” referring to plural publications and “if paper consumptions high,” which needs a verb and a more suitable noun form. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and verb forms, then proofread each sentence. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
