IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It can be seen that the trend of hardcopys are now become negligible. In the upcoming years, the taste of majority people will totally change towards ebooks instead of buying printed ones. I agree with this sentiment because softcopys are more convenient and save plenty of time.

On the one hand, people find online reading more easier. This is because advancement in technology. In the future, reading is easily accessible on internet. Therefore, people prefer to read everything online instead of moving pages. As a result, this approach can positively affect people's life. For example, many companies try to make those websites through which people can acquire knowledge without any cost.

On the other hand, the usage of ebooks save plenty of time because people can just click the search bar and type what they want without wasting time on looking the pages of newspaper and seek out the information. Hence, this can be lead to improve their grip on mobile rather than searching data on printed books. For instance, Google is trying to make a platform on which everyday articles are arranged in an order. People can read any topic by clicking on them. This makes the process fast without delaying a single moment.

In conclusion, people will not pay any attention to the printed books or newspapers in the forthcoming years. They find online learning more convenient and trustworthy free of cost. I believe that this development can change the perspective of individuals because ebooks are easy to tackle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will replace printed materials, and you give two relevant reasons—convenience and faster access to information. The examples about free websites and Google also help illustrate your points. However, the response only partly addresses the statement’s specific claim that people will be able to read everything online without paying. You mention free access, but do not examine whether all books and newspapers will actually be available at no cost, or whether some readers will continue to value print. Several ideas remain broad, such as saying online reading can “positively affect people's life.” Develop each reason with a more precise explanation and acknowledge the limits of your prediction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. The main ideas are generally easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical: “Therefore,” “As a result,” and “Hence” often connect claims without making the relationship fully clear. The second body paragraph also shifts from saving time to improving people’s “grip on mobile,” which is not clearly linked to the main argument. Some references, such as “those websites” and “This,” are vague. Make the links between each reason, explanation, and example more explicit, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “advancement in technology,” “accessible,” “acquire knowledge,” and “platform.” These choices show an attempt to express ideas beyond very basic language. However, the range is limited by repeated references to “people,” “online,” and “printed,” while several word forms and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “hardcopys,” “softcopys,” “the taste of majority people,” and “improve their grip on mobile.” Such choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Use standard forms such as “hard copies” and “digital books,” and choose collocations that fit the point—for example, “search for information” rather than “seek out the information” in this context. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish access, cost, convenience, and reading habits.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and examples introduced by “For example.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For instance, “the trend of hardcopys are now become negligible” has problems with agreement and verb form; “the usage of ebooks save” should have a singular verb; and “this can be lead to improve” is not a correct verb pattern. “This is because advancement in technology” is also an incomplete construction. These recurring errors make some sentences awkward and occasionally slow the reader. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and check that each sentence has a complete clause before adding more complex structures.
