IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is a common perception that people will not buy newspapers and books as everything will be available online for free. However,I completely disagree with this statement. This essay will elaborate the reasons for my disagreement as well as the opinion of the other group.

One of the main reasons is that newspapers and books hold a valueable place in our society.Senior citizens have been reading them for many years. Some people love to read books and newspapers while having a cup of tea in the evening. Moreover, mostly newspaper publish verified news and in this way people are not misguided. For example, jobs offers are published in newspaper on daily basis by the government.

Another reason is that some people find it tough to use screens and search books and news.Headache and vision problems are reported by the overuse of screens.People of old age specially face dificulty while using mobile phones. In contrast, books and newspaper are easy to read and can be carried anywhere. For example, some people love to read their favourtie story books while being on vacations.Books can be kept for a long time and any important thing can be marked.Additionaly, one can gift his book to his friend after reading it.

People who argue that there will be no need to buy books and newspapers have opposite opinion. They believe that a valueable amount can be saved by reading online as it is free. Also, they claim that social media is easily accesible and they can save time by just opening an application in their mobile phones and reading any book or newspaper of their choice.

In conclusion,I believe that while electronic media is growing fastly and easily accessible, the importane of books and newspapers cant not be denied. They are irreplaceable as they not only provide authentic news but also hold strong cultural and tradional values in our society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I completely disagree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both sides by explaining why some readers value print and why others prefer free, convenient online access. The points about older readers, screen-related discomfort, portability, and keeping or gifting books are relevant, with examples that help illustrate your view. This meets the task well, while showing some of the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the claim that newspapers provide verified news and the example of government job offers are only briefly explained, and the opposing view is presented rather than examined in depth. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and explain why they do not outweigh the advantages of print.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting print, a paragraph presenting the opposing view, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Another reason,” “In contrast,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Paragraphing is appropriate and the central position is easy to track. To make the progression more polished, use linking devices less formulaically and connect examples more explicitly to the point they support. For instance, after mentioning screen-related problems, explain how this makes printed material a practical alternative. The transition into the paragraph beginning “People who argue” could also show more clearly how the counterargument relates to your disagreement. Overall, organisation is clear, though some cohesion is a little mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and convey your ideas, including phrases such as “verified news,” “vision problems,” “easily accessible,” and “cultural values.” The meaning is generally clear, and there are attempts to use topic-related language rather than relying entirely on basic terms. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions limit the range and control: “valueable,” “dificulty,” “favourtie,” and “fastly” are examples, while “a valueable amount” is not a natural collocation. Repetition of “books and newspapers” and “people” also makes the vocabulary less flexible. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise alternatives, such as “printed publications,” “readers,” and “a considerable amount of money.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“as everything will be available online”) and a contrast structure (“while electronic media is growing…”). Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the argument remains understandable despite some grammatical and punctuation errors. For example, “newspaper publish” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “on daily basis” needs an article. The sentence “People of old age specially face dificulty while using mobile phones” also has an awkward grammatical construction; a clearer form would be “Older people may find mobile phones difficult to use.” Commas after introductory phrases and spaces after full stops are often missing. Review agreement, articles, and sentence punctuation, while continuing to practise varied complex structures.
