IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate on whether anyone will purchase printed books or newspapers in the upcoming years, as everything will be available at our fingertips free of cost ,with the help of internet. Although there are multiple benefits of reading news or storybooks online, I believe there will be importance of physical books and newpaper in the future also. Therefore, I partially agree with this statement.

At the outset, the most plausible reason is convenience and cost-effectiveness of reading online books and news. An increasing number of people are finding online reading more preferrable, not only they find it more convenient, but also they because they are free of cost. People can read books by just clicking on a link and they do not need to travel for purchasing a book. Thus, these benfits eventually convince them to shift from physical to e-books.Nonetheless, there are various issues of reading books or news on internet such as lack of understanding and weakness of eyesight.

On the other hand, I state that even if half of the population is interested in online information, there are still some individuals that would prefer physical piece of information due to several reasons.First and foremost, printed books or newpapers provides them a sense of feeling that only a phsical piece of page can give. Besides, old people would not read e-books as it can excerabate their weak eyesight. The further reason is impact on economy. The various enterprises will not let their companies go bankrupt. Thus, they will surely organise the compaign to advertise the benefits of reading from physical paper.

In Conclusion, I agree that more and more people are interested in e-books rather than printed papers or story books, but still there is a proportion of people who loves the experience of physical books and prefer to read those . All in all, despite the cost-effectiveness and convenience, I believe that its physical issues such as worsening eyesight and increasing mental strain could hurdle the worldwide acceptance of e-books.Ultimately, in future there will be printed newspapers or books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partially agree that online reading will grow, but believe printed publications will remain. You address both sides with relevant points, including convenience and cost, the reading experience of physical books, older readers’ eyesight, and publishers’ economic interests. This covers the task well, and the conclusion returns to your view. However, some support is not fully convincing or developed. For example, the claim that online reading causes “lack of understanding” is not explained, and the point about companies organising campaigns does not clearly show why people will continue buying print. Develop these ideas with specific reasoning or examples, and make the distinction between free online access and paid content more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting considerations, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “At the outset,” “On the other hand,” and “In Conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the main position is maintained. Some connections, however, feel mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph moves from convenience and cost to eyesight without explaining how that concern relates to the preceding point. In the second, the link between businesses avoiding bankruptcy and people continuing to buy print needs to be made explicit. There are also crowded transitions, such as “Besides, old people…” followed by “The further reason…”. Use clearer links between each reason and the central argument, and ensure references such as “those” have an unmistakable antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “cost-effectiveness,” “at our fingertips,” “physical piece of information,” and “worldwide acceptance.” These attempts to use less common vocabulary show some flexibility, and the intended meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “more preferrable,” “newpaper,” “phsical,” and “excerabate” are inaccurate, while “physical piece of information” is awkward for printed publications. “Physical issues” also does not express the intended idea of disadvantages or effects. Choose natural topic-specific collocations, check spelling carefully, and avoid using formal-sounding phrases unless their meaning and fit are clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession clause (“Although there are multiple benefits…”) and a conditional structure (“even if half of the population…”). The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships between ideas less clear. For example, “not only they find it more convenient, but also they because they are free of cost” has faulty parallel structure, and “printed books or newpapers provides” has subject–verb disagreement. Other examples include “there will be importance” and “there is a proportion of people who loves,” where article or agreement choices need attention. Review sentence boundaries and punctuation too, particularly missing spaces after full stops and commas. Aim for accurate, complete clauses before adding complexity.
