IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the next few decades, most of the people think nobody will buy printed newspapers or books. They gave the reason, they think people will have online platforms where they don't pay and they study without any intruption. Even they don't have to go anywhere and they got their desired knowledge on the internet. In the following paragraphs, I will give reason and elaborate my answer.

There are different kinds of people and everyone has different point of view regarding printed newspapers or books and many other paper written things. According to my point of view, I agree with the people who think that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books. There are different reasons to support my stance. The very first, I think it is costly for the people to buy newspapers. Today is the era of technology and people can easily access to the internet. On the internet, they got anything related to their topic without spending a single penny. On the other hand, after studying people will throw it in streets or anywhere that will cause many environmental problems. In rainy seaso it blocks the drainage and becomes headache for the whole city. When wind blew these papers covers the windscreen of the cars and cause the accidents that happens in rare cases but it causes someone's death.

In conclusion, I think people will soon move to the internet where they got their desired knowledge and they did't buy newspapers. That is good for our environment and also it reduces the cost of buying.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that people will stop buying printed newspapers and books, and you give reasons related to free online access, cost and environmental effects. These points are relevant, but the response addresses the prompt only partially because it focuses mainly on newspapers and gives little attention to books or to whether all desired material will actually be available online without payment. Some support is also under-developed: the claims about paper blocking drains and causing road accidents are asserted rather than explained, and the discussion does not consider a counterpoint such as readers’ preference for printed books. Develop the reasons with specific explanation and address both printed formats to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a main paragraph presenting reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal movement between ideas. However, progression within the main paragraph is not always smooth: the discussion moves from cost to internet access, then to litter, drainage and traffic accidents without clearly grouping or connecting these points. The opening also repeats the prediction before presenting your position. Use separate body paragraphs for distinct reasons, and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting explanation explicit. This would make the organisation more consistently logical and reduce the impression of a list.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “printed newspapers or books,” “access to the internet,” “environmental problems” and “drainage.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, which sometimes makes the reader pause. For example, “study without any intruption” is unclear in this context, “got their desired knowledge” is not a natural expression, and “becomes headache” needs a more suitable phrase. Spelling errors such as “intruption,” “seaso” and “did't” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing digital access, publication and environmental impact, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including the relative clause in “papers covers the windscreen of the cars” and the conditional idea about online access. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction can make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “they got anything,” “When wind blew,” and “that happens in rare cases but it causes someone's death.” The opening also contains a run-on structure: “They gave the reason, they think…” Try using a wider range of accurately controlled sentences, and check that subjects and verbs agree and that tense remains consistent. Breaking long or joined clauses into clear sentences will also improve punctuation and readability.
