IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a controversy about buying newspapers or books. Some argue that in the long-term no one will be buy printed newspapers and books due to digital books people will not spend their money on buying them. I partially agree with this statement. Although with the help of internet it is easy to find books and other sources free of cost, printed newspapers and books help to improve reading skills.

On the one hand, Nowadays, most pupils want to study through online books because it is convenient to use and easy to find their academic related resources because firstly, students spent too much time in library to find books. Furthermore, most disadvantages youngsters who do not buy expencive books can easily find their book online with free off cost. For example, in China their students do not carry heavy bags with books they just take their ipads or phone at school for learning. As a result, they feel enjoyment during studies.

On the other hand, printed books and newspaper play a curcial role in individuals lives, because printed books do not need to much concentration while studing through mobile may lead to headache or pain in eyes. In addition, predominantly officers who give competitive exams also read from printed newspapers because it helps to maintain focus and read with speed and with less effort. So, I believe printed articles or books will also help for next generation for their career.

In conclusion, there is an on going debate about printed reading books and newspapers that people will not buy and they everthing take from online sources. I partly agree with this view. Both have their own advantages but reading form printed books or articles is every important for next generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: “I partially agree,” and the conclusion repeats this view. You address both sides by discussing the convenience and cost of online materials, then explaining why printed texts may remain useful for concentration and exam preparation. These are relevant points, but some are less fully developed than others. For instance, the claim that printed books “help to improve reading skills” appears in the introduction but is not explained later, while the point about eye strain could be linked more directly to why people will continue buying print. The response also focuses mainly on students and exam candidates, so it could consider other readers and address more directly whether online content will be free. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signalled by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and examples are generally placed with the point they support. The linking is sometimes mechanical or unclear, however. The first body paragraph repeats “because” and “Furthermore,” while the sentence beginning “On the one hand” contains several ideas joined together, making their relationships difficult to track. Some references are also vague, such as “they” in the China example and “Both” in the conclusion. Use shorter, more clearly organised sentences and make pronoun references explicit; vary transitions so they show the precise relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “convenient,” “academic related resources,” “competitive exams,” and “maintain focus.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “play a crucial role,” but inaccurate spelling and word choice reduce precision: “expencive,” “curcial,” and “predominantly officers” are examples. Several phrases are unnatural or unclear, including “free off cost,” “feel enjoyment,” and “reading form printed books.” Repetition of “books,” “printed,” and “online” also limits flexibility. Aim to learn common collocations as complete phrases and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help readers understand your ideas without changing the relevant points you have made.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “because,” and “while,” and your overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “no one will be buy” should be “no one will buy,” and “printed books and newspaper play” needs plural agreement. In “students spent too much time in library,” the tense and article do not fit the general claim. The long sentence beginning “On the one hand” also combines clauses without clear grammatical control. Review verb patterns after modal verbs, subject–verb agreement, and article use, then check each sentence for a clear subject and main verb.
