IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that in the coming years nobody will buy printed newspapers or books the individuals will be able to read everything they want online without paying. While some individuals believe that printed newspapers are good because for this no internet or any connection required for this, I firmly agree with this perspective because of several compelling reasons.

The primary reason why I support this view is that now the world is changing very fast and all the work nowadays done online. This is mainly because individuals today have more acess or more opportunities as compared to previous times. Moreover, there are a lot facilities nowadays in education syatem, which are very beneficial for students. For instance, in previous years if the students wants to know the meaning of some soecific words. They were bought dictionaries from bookshops but now this facility is available on different onile apps like Chatgpt and Mata and also students now find books releted to thier course in the form of PDF and they do not need to pay anyone for these books.

Another significant factor worth considering is that newspapers are also available nowadays just on one click and we do not need to wait for newspapers. In other words if a incident happened in one part of the world, the people who are sitting in the other part of the world seen that incident at that moment instantly. Furthermore, online news also offer individuals to give their feedback in the comment section that's why online news become very popular as compare to reading newspapers.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that onilne newspaper become very fimiliar in the future because of its easy acess. This is primarily because onilne newspapers or online books gives individuals relaxation that they can watch newspapers from anywhere without paying for this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online access will reduce purchases of printed material, and you give relevant examples involving free PDFs, online dictionaries and instant news. These examples show an understanding of the topic. However, the response addresses the claim only partially because it does not fully examine the prediction that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books. The opening briefly mentions the convenience of print, but this counterpoint is not developed, and the conclusion mainly repeats the advantages of online access. Some claims, such as “all the work nowadays done online,” are broad and need qualification or support. To strengthen the response, explain why online reading may replace most purchases while acknowledging reasons some people may continue buying print.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs generally group related points: the first focuses on educational resources, while the second discusses online news. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Another significant factor” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several transitions feel mechanical. For example, “This is mainly because” introduces a broad claim about access without clearly connecting it to the preceding point. The sentence beginning “For instance” also shifts abruptly into a past example. Use clearer topic sentences and make each example explicitly support the paragraph’s main claim; vary linking devices and ensure references such as “this” have a clear antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “printed newspapers,” “PDF,” “comment section” and “feedback.” However, the range is limited and some wording is repetitive, particularly repeated references to “online newspapers,” “individuals” and “nowadays.” Several spelling errors, including “acess,” “syatem,” “soecific” and “onilne,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. There are also awkward or imprecise collocations, such as “online news offer individuals to give their feedback” and “online newspaper become very fimiliar.” Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully. Using alternatives such as “digital publications,” “access,” and “become increasingly popular” would make the discussion more natural and varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “if” and “while,” but control is inconsistent, and many sentences contain errors that can make the reader pause. For example, “all the work nowadays done online” is missing a verb, while “if the students wants” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. In “the people … seen that incident,” the verb form is incorrect, and “online newspapers or online books gives” has a plural subject with a singular verb. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “if a incident happened” and the long sentence beginning “For instance” should be corrected or divided. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build complex structures with consistent tense, agreement and punctuation.
