IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
With the invention of technology, it is not wrong to say that the world has changed in a better way. This technology with its features makes life much easier than before. But I strongly disagree with this opinion that there will be no need to buy printed newspapers or books because of the availability of online material.
Newspapers are a source of rich information about the world. We can spend our time in reading a newspaper and its different sections can help us in connecting ourselves to the global world. For example, the section of local and international news allow us to get a big picture of the global issues. It can also help us to understand our part in the global world. Moreover, the collection of printed stories is also an overwhleming experience for the children as well.
On the other hand, printed books help us in brainstorming. We can search for the information in the books and by comparing the different editions of the same books. For example, the process of searching in the books and sections help us in memorizing the context of the books. This experience is missing from the online search. In online search, we use to ask the question and get the relevant information. Although, it saves our time but it also eliminates us from the process of brainstorming.
To summarize, we can say that the printed newspapers and books allow us to become creative in ideas. They can also help us in memorizing the information with the help of search process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly disagree that online access will eliminate the need for printed newspapers and books. You give relevant reasons, including newspapers’ role in connecting readers with global issues and printed books’ potential to support memory and brainstorming. However, the task asks whether people will stop buying printed material because they can read everything online without paying. Your response focuses more on the benefits of print than on the future of buying, and it does not directly examine the claim that online reading will be free or available for everything. The children’s experience of printed stories is also mentioned but not explained. Develop these points with specific comparisons or examples to address the prompt more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The progression from newspapers to books is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “To summarize” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. To make the progression more consistently clear, connect each paragraph more directly to the question of whether online access will replace purchases. Some links are also imprecise: “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, although the paragraph adds another reason for print, and “This experience” could refer more clearly to the specific process described.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “global issues,” “different editions,” “memorizing,” and “brainstorming.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “connecting ourselves to the global world,” “an overwhelming experience,” and “eliminates us from the process.” “Big picture” is understandable but informal for this essay. There are also spelling errors, including “overwhleming.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but more precise collocations would make your argument clearer and more academic. Aim to choose expressions that describe the specific benefit of print rather than relying on broad or awkward wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “because of the availability of online material” and a relative clause in “the process of searching in the books and sections help us…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the section … allow us” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “we use to ask the question” uses an incorrect verb form for a habitual action. The sentence beginning “Although, it saves our time” is punctuated incorrectly and is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence. Review agreement, verb patterns, and punctuation around introductory clauses. Greater control of these structures would make the argument easier to read.
