IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the coming years people will stop buying printed newspapers and books. This is because printed newspapers and books will be available online and they wont have to pay for it. I agree with this statement as reading online will be easly available.

In the future peopel will prefer read online, this is because reading online will lead to low cost or even people can read without paying for the newspapers or books. As a result, the consumers money will be saved and it can lead them spending money somewhere more importent. For example, education, rent and other importent things. Futhermore, it can aslo save traval cost as the coutomer won't have to traval to the book store. As a result, they will have to spent less on pratol.

However, printed newspapers and books has become a part of the socity as it has been famoes for years and years. As a result, even if the demand of printed newspapers and books will fall there might not be much chang in the production of newspapers or books. Moreover, not all types and kind of books will be available online, this is because soem books are rare and difficlt to find due to that people will have to go and purches it.

In conclution, i agree with this statement as nowerdays the young genreration prefers to read newspapers and books online insted to purching the printed ones. Moreover, they can read it without paying for it but if they have to the cost will be low comparing to the printed ones

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading will reduce purchases of printed material. You give relevant reasons, including lower costs, saving travel expenses, and the continued appeal of printed books. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The point that online reading saves money is repeated, while the claim that printed publications will remain part of society is not fully explained or reconciled with your overall agreement. The rare-book example is relevant, but it would be stronger with a clearer explanation of why such books may remain unavailable online. Develop each reason with more specific explanation and make clear how your counterpoint affects your final position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting different sides, and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have a clear central focus, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Furthermore,” and “However” help show relationships between ideas. At times, though, these links are repetitive or do not make the reasoning fully clear: “As a result” introduces both the saving of money and the claim about production, where the connection needs more explanation. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing the discussion together. Use a wider range of transitions selectively, and make references such as “it” and “they” unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “consumers,” “demand,” “production,” and “rare.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less precise. Examples include “low cost,” “the consumers money,” “famous for years and years,” and “the cost will be low comparing to the printed ones.” Frequent spelling errors such as “easly,” “importent,” and “purches” also affect the reader’s impression. Build a more accurate range of phrases for discussing affordability, access, and consumer habits, and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “as,” and “even if,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often not controlled accurately. For example, “people will prefer read online” needs an infinitive form, while “printed newspapers and books has become” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “they will have to spent less,” the verb form is incorrect; “even if the demand … will fall” also uses an unsuitable tense pattern. Work on verb patterns, agreement, and conditional or time clauses, then check each sentence for a complete and accurate structure.
