IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the modern era, no one can deny the role the Internet is playing in our life .Anything you may look for can be found there , it contains most of the knowledge humanity ever produced. That is why some argue that in the future nobody will buy pritned newspapers or books since anyone will be able to read everything they want online without paying. I partially disagree with this point of view as I believe that e-reader will never replace tangible books completly.
Firstly, although many books have there electronic version ,they still require paying for it.thus ,reading everything without paying is an overstatement .Authors should have the right to get paid for there published books, depite being an intangible version.
Moreover , having a tangible book can be more convinient and reliable in many cases ,consquently financial gain wont be the only motive to buy a printed book .For example, many people enjoy reading on the train .however ,an e-reader can run out of charge .Plus it is more likely to get stolen.
In addition ,some old books dont have there online verisons .thus not everything will be available online .
To conclude ,while online books have numerous advantages ,it can not replace printed versions completly . as every version has its role .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear: you partially disagree because printed books retain advantages, and you give relevant reasons involving payment, convenience, battery life, theft, and older books. However, the response addresses the claim only partly: it focuses mainly on books and says little about printed newspapers or the prediction that people will stop buying them. The reasons are also brief and not fully explained—for example, the point about older books lacks an example or explanation of why they may remain unavailable online. The response is 203 words, 47 words below the 250-word minimum; the 11 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop each main point with explanation or an example, and address both books and newspapers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your position, separate paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your view. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” help readers follow the argument. However, the progression is quite mechanical, and some links between sentences are awkward or unclear. For instance, “thus” begins a new point without appropriate capitalization, while “as every version has its role” is attached to the conclusion in a way that makes the final relationship between ideas less clear. The paragraph about older books is also very short and feels underdeveloped. Use clearer sentence connections and build each body paragraph around one reason, followed by explanation or an example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “tangible books,” “electronic version,” “financial gain,” and “available online.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “pritned,” “completly,” “convinient,” and “run out of charge.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly the repeated references to “books” and “versions.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, and use precise terms to distinguish printed books, e-books, and newspapers. Proofreading and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “although many books have there electronic version” and a reason clause beginning “since anyone will be able to read…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to read. Examples include “no one can deny the role the Internet is playing in our life,” where the singular possessive form is needed, and “it can not replace printed versions,” where the pronoun does not clearly agree with the plural subject “online books.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: several sentences run together after full stops, and spaces before punctuation are inconsistent. Practise accurate agreement, articles, pronoun reference, and sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
