IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technological advancements have already taken over the entire world over the years and artificial intelligence is not a new concept anymore for the alpha generation. Digitalised media replacing printed copies because of the ease and comfort it provides to carry it in your pocket or bags or using it anywhere according to your convenience and time has definitely led us to new world of innovative techniques. Personally, I disagree with this opinion as I love the essence books carry within them and I shall put forth my viewpoints in the upcoming paragraphs.

Development of noveau websites, apps, blogs, social media reviews and critics has led many people to just listen or read over the short summaries to get an overview of the film or a book to save time without paying anything and just to get a glimpse of what they would foresee next in future. For instance, if they are travelling in a bus, train or a car to reach their workplace they can utlilise their time watching them or even with a small subscription read out the entire novel or a story on gadgets like kindle, ipads, laptops, etc.

I am of the opinion that books carry a typical smell which attracts and amuses the older generation a lot. For example, a middle aged couple would buy a book to know the whole story rather than watching a movie over it. My friends believe the same thing and so do I. Reading is one of my favourite hobbies which I would pursue till my very end as it increases your imagination, creativity and even expands your vocabulary over time.

Today's generation should be encouraged to read more as it would increase their problem-solving skills and help them attain knowledgeable insights all over the world. Although, digital prints have taken over the today as well as in future too, they can never replace books anytime over a long period of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you disagree that printed books and newspapers will disappear, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You also give relevant reasons, including the appeal of physical books and the benefits of reading for imagination and vocabulary. However, the response only partly addresses the specific prediction in the prompt. The paragraph about websites, summaries and subscriptions describes digital reading, but does not clearly explain whether people will be able to access everything online for free or why printed newspapers and books will continue to be bought. The example of a couple choosing a book over a film is also not fully connected to the claim. Develop these points with direct comparisons and more specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, with each paragraph broadly focused on a related idea. Phrases such as “For instance” and “Although” help signal examples and contrast. However, progression within the argument is sometimes unclear. The first body paragraph moves from free summaries to travel and then to paid subscriptions without explaining how these points support your disagreement. The reference to “them” after “summaries” is also unclear, and “My friends believe the same thing” does not add much to the reasoning. Make each paragraph develop one main claim, use clearer links between evidence and your position, and ensure pronouns refer unmistakably to their intended ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary and attempt some less common expressions, including “innovative techniques,” “problem-solving skills” and “knowledgeable insights.” The topic is generally easy to follow, and words such as “subscription,” “imagination” and “creativity” are relevant. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however, which limits precision: “the essence books carry within them,” “read out the entire novel,” and “digital prints have taken over the today” do not express your intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors such as “nouveau” (written as “noveau”) and “utilise” (written as “utlilise”). Aim for precise collocations and check spelling; for example, distinguish reading a digital book from listening to an audiobook.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause (“if they are travelling…”) and a concessive opening (“Although…”). Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce clarity. For example, “Digitalised media replacing printed copies… has” lacks a clear finite verb in the opening, while “Although, digital prints have taken over the today” has faulty punctuation and sentence construction. In “it increases your imagination,” the shift from “I” to “your” is inconsistent, and “a middle aged couple” needs a hyphen when used as a compound modifier. Review sentence boundaries, subject–verb structure and consistent pronouns, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
