IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that readers will get the opportunities to read free e-books in the near future and nobody will buy printed newspapers and books anymore. I strongly support this statement that will get free access to read books and newspapers online.

There are numerous reasons of reading books online, the first reason is that, people are getting technological advantages. All people have access to the internet so that they can easily get the portable document format of books. Moreover students get the opportunity to read the foreign writers book so they can enlarge their intellectuality. Another reason is, online newspapers are so fast and reliable than before and people get chance to read different news from both national and internation. Thirdly, reading e-books and online newspapers is less time consuming and more convenient. For instance, a reader can read any book or newspaper on his devices by sitting outside of home as well as he has not to carry heavy books from one place to another place.

Moreover, e-books and online newspapers contain less errors and more reliable. People can get instant news so that people cab be easily awared regarding any contemporary circumstance. However, printed documents contain so many mistakes and misleading information. Moreover, online books and newspapers provide advanced resolution to the readers so that they can read properly without distractions whereas most printed books are not in quality. To print books it requires, a huge number of papers to be printed and it leads environmental degradation. That is why, printed medias are eco-friendly. Finally, printed materials are so expencive whereas online medias are quite cheap and some of them are free to read.

In conclusion, i would say that e-books and online portals are significantly important and helpful to the readers rather than printed medias. Because these are highly resoluted and cheap than printed ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly support the view that readers will move to online books and newspapers. You give relevant reasons, including convenience, access to international news, lower cost and reduced paper use, and the conclusion restates your preference. This addresses the task, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that online publications contain fewer errors and are more reliable is not supported, and the comparison with printed materials is broad. The prompt also focuses on whether people will stop buying printed publications because online reading will be free; develop this prediction directly, including why free access might replace purchases and whether printed formats could still appeal to some readers. This would make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main ideas are generally grouped by topic. However, progression within the body paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The first body paragraph moves from technology to foreign writers, news, convenience and portability, while the second combines reliability, errors, resolution, environmental effects and price. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “Another reason” and “Finally” help signal additions, but their repeated use can feel mechanical, and some connections between claims are unclear. For example, the contrast beginning “However” does not clearly explain how printed documents relate to the preceding point. Organise each paragraph around one central reason and use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “technological advantages,” “contemporary circumstance,” “environmental degradation” and “misleading information.” These choices show an effort to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, several word choices, collocations and spelling errors reduce precision: “enlarge their intellectuality,” “international,” “awared,” “expencive” and “highly resoluted” are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Online medias” is also not an appropriate plural form. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your overall argument, but they make some claims less clear and natural. Aim for accurate, conventional combinations such as “broaden their knowledge,” “international news,” “stay informed” and “high-resolution text,” and check spelling and countability when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “so that,” “whereas” and “because,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction, agreement, articles and punctuation. For example, “I strongly support this statement that will get free access” lacks a clear subject for “will get,” while “There are numerous reasons of reading books online, the first reason is that” joins two independent clauses with a comma. In “a reader can read … as well as he has not to carry,” the second clause is awkwardly formed, and “To print books it requires” has an unclear subject structure. Use complete clauses, check subject–verb relationships, and separate or connect independent clauses correctly. More accurate complex sentences would improve control.
