IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the step-wise manufacturing process of the instant noodles.
Overall, it can be seen that the manufacturing of instant noodels are performed in sequential process that starts from the flour and end on labelling the product.
Flour is the essential component that is used in the manufacturing of instant noodels, which is transported to the storage space by truck. The flour is then mixed with water and oil in a mixer to make dough and passed through the rollers to make the sheets from it. Dough strips are used to make strips from the dough and put on the noodles discs.
The sixth process is used for cooking the noodles in oil until drying for crispiness. Then the noodles are poured into cups and vegetables and spices are added to the final product and start the process of labelling. After putting the ingredients then starts the final process called labelling and then comes the sealing to properly seal th eproduct inside.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as sequential and give a relevant overview, noting that it begins with flour and ends with labelling. Several key stages are also included, such as mixing, rolling, cooking and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the dough is formed into sheets and then strips, whereas “Dough strips are used to make strips from the dough” does not explain this progression; the strips are shaped into noodle discs, rather than being “put on the noodles discs.” The description also suggests labelling is the endpoint, but the diagram shows labels and sealing before the finished cups emerge. Covering the stages in order with more precise descriptions would make the account more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the early and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “The flour is then,” and “Then” help the reader follow the process. However, the stages are not always connected precisely, and some references are difficult to interpret. For example, “Dough strips are used to make strips from the dough” repeats information without clarifying the next step, while “After putting the ingredients then starts the final process” has an unclear relationship between the actions. Organise the body around the process sequence and use explicit links such as “Next,” “After the strips are formed,” and “Finally” to improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “transported,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “ingredients,” and “sealing.” These choices make the general subject clear, and some less common terms are attempted. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “storage space” is less exact than “storage silos,” and “the noodles are poured into cups” does not describe the diagram’s process as naturally as “placed into cups.” There are also spelling errors in “noodels” and “th eproduct.” Aim for precise terms from the diagram and check spelling; this will make the description more accurate without requiring a more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “Flour is the essential component that is used…” and a sequence of actions joined within longer sentences. The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the overview, “the manufacturing … are performed” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “starts from the flour and end on labelling” has inconsistent verb forms and an unsuitable preposition. The final sentence, “After putting the ingredients then starts the final process,” lacks a clear grammatical subject. Practise forming passive process sentences consistently, for example, “The flour is mixed…” and “The cups are then labelled and sealed,” while checking agreement and sentence structure.
