IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram explains the step by step making process of packaged instant noodles. The first and foremost step to making noodles is the transportation of flour used to make noodles through truck to the storage silos from there onwards flour is mixed with oil along with water in a mixer machine .The machine thoroghly mixes the flour until a fine dough is ready. After that dough passes through intrument that turns it itno straight long sheets. The strips then converted into different shape mostly disc fpr easy cooking and handling . Afterwards they are cooked with oil and dried down later and packed into cup. Then comes the process of adding flavours and dried vegetables . The last step in the process is labelling and to seal the noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages, from flour delivery and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing. However, the account is brief and does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole or enough precise detail about key stages. For example, the diagram shows dough being formed into sheets, cut into strips, and shaped into noodle discs, but these transitions are compressed and partly unclear. The order of adding vegetables and spices is also reversed: they are added after cooking and drying, not before the noodles are packed into cups. The response is 129 words, below the required 150, which limits how fully the stages can be reported. Develop the sequence more accurately and include a concise overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are presented in a broadly chronological order, and linking phrases such as “After that,” “Afterwards,” and “The last step” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is written as one long paragraph, and several transitions are awkward or unclear. In particular, “Afterwards they are cooked with oil and dried down later and packed into cup. Then comes the process of adding flavours” makes the relationship between cooking, cup filling, and adding ingredients difficult to follow. Some references, such as “they” and “the machine,” could also be clearer. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the detailed stages, and connect each stage with precise sequencing language.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “dough,” “strips,” “cooked,” and “labelling,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “step by step making process,” “instrument,” “dried down,” and “different shape mostly disc.” There are also spelling errors, including “thoroghly,” “intrument,” “itno,” and “fpr,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for more precise terms from the diagram, such as “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “noodle discs,” and “sealing,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description clearer without requiring overly complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates a basic sequence, but sentence structures are limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “The first and foremost step to making noodles is the transportation of flour … through truck to the storage silos” has awkward sentence construction and missing articles or prepositions. The sentence beginning “Afterwards they are cooked” also combines several stages without clear grammatical links, while “Then comes the process” shifts into a less controlled construction. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, including missing spaces after full stops and extra spaces within sentences. Practise writing clear passive forms for process descriptions, such as “The flour is transported to the silos” and “The noodles are then cooked and dried,” and check each sentence for complete, accurate structure.
