IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of manufactuirng instant noodles in 8 stages.
It can be observed that the fisrt stage includes the process of storing the flour in the storage silos. After that in the second step the stored flour is mixed with water and oil in a mixer machine .The third step includes the making of dough sheets which is obtained by moving the mixed flour though rollers. The fourth step is one of the main steps that give noodles the shape they are intended to be as in the fourth step the noodles are converted into dough strips.
After that the noodles are shaped into circular discs in the fifth step which then later on in the sixth step are passed through cooking oil and are later dried. In the seventh step the dried noodles are filled in cups where different vegetables and spices are added to it to enhance the flavour and i the last step the cups are labelled and sealed are are ready to be sold.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as having eight stages and report several key steps in the correct order, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, shaping discs, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, the account is only partly complete: it does not clearly describe the initial delivery of flour by truck, the rollers that shape the dough, or the final product emerging on a conveyor. There is also an inaccurate description of stage seven: the cups are filled with noodles and then vegetables and spices are added, rather than the dried noodles simply being filled into cups. A concise overview of the process from flour storage to sealed cups, followed by more precise coverage of the stages, would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in sequence, and transitions such as “After that,” “In the seventh step,” and “in the last step” help the reader follow the process. The response also groups related actions into a continuous account. However, it is written as one long paragraph, and the repeated reliance on numbered-stage transitions makes the progression somewhat mechanical. Some links between actions are unclear, particularly the move from cooking and drying to filling the cups. Use a separate overview and process paragraph, and connect steps by describing what happens to the product—for example, “The cooked and dried discs then move to the filling stage.” This would make the organisation clearer and cohesion less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to describe the main stages, with relevant terms such as “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “circular discs,” and “labelled and sealed.” These choices make the process understandable. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “step” appears frequently, “the noodles are shaped” is less exact than describing the dough being formed into discs, and “enhance the flavour” adds an unsupported purpose rather than reporting the diagram. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “manufactuirng” and “fisrt,” and the phrase “i the last step.” Use more precise process verbs and vary the stage language; careful proofreading would also improve control and readability.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and time links such as “which then later on in the sixth step.” The sequence is usually understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to make parts awkward. For example, “the cups are labelled and sealed are are ready to be sold” joins clauses incorrectly and repeats the verb, while “the dried noodles are filled in cups where different vegetables and spices are added to it” has unclear reference and agreement. Several sentences also run together without consistent spacing after full stops. Practise separating stages into complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, pronoun reference, and punctuation.
