IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram provides the information about the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Overall, it is apparent that there are 8 steps are involve in manufacturing of instant noodles which is started with storage of flour in silo bins and ended up with labelling and sealing of noodles cup.
Intially, the flour is store in silo bins for storage purpose for specific duration and then added water and oil into mixer where the dough shifted on the rollers to convert into dough sheets. After that dough sheets cut into strips with the help of cutter and then change into discs form. Subsequently, the noodles discs is cook into oil and then dry it down.
After the packaging steps starts in cups vegetables and spices place into cups with the cooked noodle disc. All process is done with the help of machines after the addition of vegetables and spices the label placed on the cups. In the last step properly seal the cups and then pack into large box and then transported to market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and give a clear overall start and finish, noting flour storage and the final cup-packaging stages. Most central stages are included: mixing, forming sheets and strips, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The diagram shows flour moving from silos to a mixer, but does not indicate that it is stored for a specific duration. It also shows noodles being placed in cups before vegetables and spices are added, followed by labelling and sealing; your account makes the order less precise. The claims that cups are packed into large boxes and transported to market are not shown. Report only the stages visible and make the sequence of cup filling and sealing more exact.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression from the initial flour stage through noodle preparation to packaging, and paragraph breaks help separate the main phases. Sequencing expressions such as “After that” and “Subsequently” guide the reader through the process. This gives the account a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression clearer and more controlled, use paragraphing to distinguish preparation, cooking, and cup packaging, and ensure each transition reflects the diagram’s exact order. For example, “After the noodles are cooked and dried, they are placed in cups, where vegetables and spices are added” would clarify the transition. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and then,” while “After the packaging steps starts” interrupts the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms make the main stages understandable, and “Subsequently” shows an attempt to vary sequencing language. However, several word choices or collocations are imprecise, such as “silo bins,” “for storage purpose,” and “change into discs form.” Some spelling errors, including “Intially,” also reduce accuracy. Prefer concise, standard process language: for example, “stored in silos,” “formed into discs,” and “the cups are labelled and sealed.” Avoid adding expressions such as “transported to market” when they are not supported by the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “where the dough shifted on the rollers” and sequencing clauses beginning with “After that” and “then.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. Examples include “there are 8 steps are involve,” “the flour is store,” “the noodles discs is cook,” and “vegetables and spices place into cups.” Use passive forms consistently for this process: “There are eight steps,” “the flour is stored,” and “the noodles are cooked.” The sentence “After the packaging steps starts in cups…” also needs restructuring. More accurate control of these basic patterns, alongside varied sentence forms, would improve clarity.
