IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles in eight steps.
Overall, the process describes how instant noodles are made. From being mixed in the mixer to being dried, all the process is done though machines. There is less human involvement and every step is carried out properly.
Step one shows how the flour is taken from the storage silos and transported by a truck to the site where it is to be manufactured. The flour is then added in the mixer with water and oil. Here, it is mixed well before it passes through the rollers. Step three shows how dough sheets are made smoothly and then many dough strips are made from these sheets.
These dough strips are then molded into the shape of noodles disc as shown in step five. These discs are then cooked in the oil and dried for a while. When the discs are dried, they are put into a cup and some vegetables and spices are added in the cup as well. After that, the instant noodles are labelled and sealed properly. The final step shows how they are packed in a cup and ready to be consumed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main sequence from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing, and its overview identifies the process as machine-based. The stages are generally grounded in the diagram, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: the flour is transported from the truck into the storage silos, rather than taken from the silos by truck, and the diagram does not state that the noodles are dried “for a while.” The overview also says the process has eight steps, although it does not clearly summarise the key transformation from flour to finished cups. To strengthen the response, describe the opening transport accurately and make the overview more informative by highlighting the linear, largely automated sequence and its final packaged product.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an overview followed by two paragraphs that move through the production stages in a clear order. Sequencing expressions such as “Step one,” “then,” “After that,” and “The final step” help the reader follow the process, and references such as “These dough strips” connect ideas effectively. The progression is generally logical, though the numbered references are not fully consistent: the text calls the process eight steps, then labels dough-sheet production as step three and the noodle discs as step five without explaining the numbering. Some transitions also make the sequence less precise, particularly the move from drying to placing the discs in cups. Use stage references consistently and connect each transition directly to the next diagrammed action.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing a manufacturing process, with relevant terms such as “storage silos,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” The writer also uses process verbs including “transported,” “molded,” and “added,” so the description is not wholly repetitive. However, several choices are imprecise or informal for an academic process report: “mixed well,” “made smoothly,” “properly,” and “ready to be consumed” add little technical information. “Molded into the shape of noodles disc” is also an awkward description of the diagram’s shaping stage. Aim for more exact process vocabulary and avoid unsupported evaluative adverbs; for example, describe the strips as being formed into noodle discs and the finished cups as emerging from the production line.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions (“are made,” “are added”) that suit a process description, and most sentences communicate the intended sequence. Some grammatical errors remain. In “all the process is done,” the determiner and agreement are incorrect; “the whole process is carried out” would be more accurate. “The flour is then added in the mixer” uses an incorrect preposition in this construction, and “many dough strips are made from these sheets” would be clearer with a more precise plural construction. The sentence beginning “From being mixed in the mixer to being dried” is also awkwardly structured. Continue using passive forms, but check agreement, articles, and prepositions, and revise sentences whose opening phrases do not connect smoothly to the main clause.
