IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of instant noodles formation from scratch.
Overall, it is a eight step procedure where the basic ingredient 'flour' undergoes different stages to finally attained an instant noodles shape. Various things were mixed with flour like water, oil, vegetables and spices before sealing.
Firstly, flour was dropped by flour truck to storage silos. This stored flour was poured in mixer, then water an oil were added in it. After mixing of these ingredients, resulting mixture was put on rollers to make dough sheet. The dough sheet is then used to made strips, long like fibers. Furthermore, formation of noodles dics took place, which were cooked in oil before drying.
The dried noodles discs were shifted to cups, where they were mixed with vegetables and different spices for additional flavour. Finally, the cups were labelled and sealed for safe delivery to the market where consumers can buy them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers the main stages in the correct order, from flour delivery and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding flavourings, and sealing. The overview identifies the process as a sequence and notes that several ingredients are added, while details such as the rollers forming sheets and strips and the noodles being cooked in oil before drying are relevant and accurate. This gives the reader a clear account of the process. Some descriptions are less precise than the diagram: the noodles are placed into cups before vegetables and spices are added, rather than being “shifted to cups” after flavouring, and the final reference to delivery to a market is not shown. To strengthen the account, describe the cup-filling stage more exactly and avoid adding an unsupported destination.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a brief overview followed by a chronological description, and the progression from “Firstly” to “Finally” makes the sequence easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “After mixing” and “Furthermore” help connect stages, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the process details. The main opportunity is to make connections between stages more precise: “Furthermore” signals addition rather than the next manufacturing step, while “This stored flour” has an unclear reference. A few transitions also compress several actions, particularly the movement into cups and the addition of vegetables and spices. Use stage-focused links such as “Next” or “The strips are then formed into discs,” and make each sentence’s subject explicit to maintain smooth progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary for describing the process, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheet,” “strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” The writer also attempts less common or descriptive wording, such as “formation” and “additional flavour,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Instant noodles formation” is not a natural description of the process, and “strips, long like fibers” is an imprecise comparison for the dough strips. There are also spelling errors in “dics” and “flavour” is used in a context where the diagram simply shows ingredients being added. Aim for standard process collocations and accurate technical terms; this will make the description more precise without requiring unnecessarily elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a relative clause in “where they were mixed with vegetables” and a sequence of passive constructions. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. Examples include “It is a eight step procedure,” “to finally attained,” “were added in it,” and “is then used to made strips.” Tense also shifts between past and present in “was put” and “is then used,” although a consistent present simple passive is generally suitable for describing a process. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the stages, but they reduce grammatical control. Check article use, subject–verb agreement, and the form of verbs after “to,” and keep tense consistent.
