IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram shows the process of manufacturing instant noodles which consists of several stages. The noodles are mixed , dried, cooked before being packed and supplied.
Primary step is to fill up the storage silos with flour. The flour from the silos are then mixed with water and oil in the mixer to form a dough. The dough is then rolled on the belt which can be turned into sheets further. In the fourth step, the dough sheets are cut into thin strips to form noodle. The next step involve turned the strips into circular disc which can fit the noodle cups. The noodle disc are then deep fried into the boiling oil to cook and then dried.
After drying the noodles it is added to cups along with the dried vegetables and some spices to make it flavourful.
The cups are further taken for labeling and sealing in the last step before supplying.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of flour to the final sealing of the cups. The overview is clear, and the main features are identified. However, the response lacks a clear comparison or a more analytical approach to the process. While it describes the sequence well, it could be improved by grouping stages more effectively or highlighting key transformations. The information is accurate, but the development of the description is somewhat mechanical, following the diagram step-by-step without providing a more sophisticated synthesis of the information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the start to the end of the process. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the main body of the process, and the final stages. Cohesive devices such as 'Primary step', 'The next step', and 'After drying' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally slightly repetitive in its structure, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'silos', 'dough', and 'labeling' used correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Primary step' (should be 'The primary step') and 'turned the strips' (should be 'turning the strips'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to describe the process, but it lacks the more precise or technical collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. The language is functional and clear throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The flour from the silos are', 'The next step involve', 'The noodle disc are') and missing articles ('to form noodle'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure consistent use of articles and verb forms when describing a process.
