IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram displays the process for manufacturing instant noodles.
Overall, the whole journey, from ingredients in the storage to the actual manufacturing and labeling takes eight steps and involves a huge machinery for the majority of the process.
The process starts with the main raw ingredient i.e. flour, being taken from storage to a big machine with distinct parts doing different steps of the production. First, the flour is mixed with the water and oil and sent to the mixer thereby turning it to a dough. That is then passed through a roller which makes it into sheets. Following that, the flat and thin sheets are then pushed through a dough strips, transforming it into strands that a typical noodle looks like.
Furthermore, the noodles are made into circular discs like structure and cooked in oil before leaving them to dry. Next, they are packed into cups together with vegetables and spices. Finally, the cup noodles are labelled and sealed concluding the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the instant noodle manufacturing process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of steps logically. However, to reach a higher band, you should aim to include more specific details from the diagram, such as the duration of the drying process or the specific temperature mentioned in the visual. While you have covered the process, the description remains somewhat general. Including these specific data points would demonstrate a more thorough analysis of the provided information, which is essential for a higher score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You have used cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Following that', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed steps. To improve, ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly more fluid, and try to vary your cohesive devices to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in the sequencing of steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, such as 'manufacturing', 'ingredients', 'dough', and 'strands'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'huge machinery' (which should be 'large-scale machinery') and 'circular discs like structure' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise technical terms or more sophisticated collocations would elevate the response. The current range is functional but lacks the precision required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'a dough strips' (should be 'dough strips') and 'leaving them to dry' (which is slightly ambiguous in context). Additionally, the phrase 'a typical noodle looks like' is grammatically incomplete. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
