IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The diagram displays the process for manufacturing instant noodles.
Overall, the whole journey, from ingredients in the storage to the actual manufacturing and labeling takes eight steps and involves a huge machinery for the majority of the process.
The process starts with the main raw ingredient, i.e. flour, being taken from storage to a big machine with distinct parts doing different steps of the production. First, the flour is mixed with the water and oil and sent to the mixer thereby turning it to a dough. That is then passed through a roller which makes it into sheets. Following that, the flat and thin sheets are then pushed through a dough strips, transforming it into strands that a typical noodle looks like.
Furthermore, the noodles are made into circular discs like structure and cooked in oil before leaving them to dry. Next, they are packed into cups together with vegetables and spices. Finally, the cup noodles are labelled and sealed, concluding the manufacturing process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the initial ingredients to the final packaging. You have successfully identified the key steps and provided a clear overview in the introduction. To improve, ensure you highlight the 'main features' more explicitly. For example, noting that the process is entirely automated or that it involves both mechanical and thermal treatments would add depth. The summary is accurate and follows the logical flow of the diagram, meeting the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the start of the process to the end. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed steps. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Following that', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the different stages of the noodle production is easy to follow. The structure is coherent and supports the overall purpose of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'raw ingredient', and 'concluding'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'huge machinery' (which should be 'large-scale machinery' or 'heavy machinery') and 'dough strips' (which is slightly awkward). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'extrusion' or 'automated assembly line'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'a huge machinery' (machinery is uncountable) and 'strands that a typical noodle looks like' (which is slightly unidiomatic; 'resembling typical noodles' would be better). Despite these, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have a good grasp of sentence construction, and the errors present are not frequent enough to impede communication.
