IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the production of instant noodles is a linear process and it contains eight steps. Including storing flour, mixing, shaping and cooking the noodles, adding vegetables and finally sealing and labelling the cups.

The manufacturing begins by, flour is stored into storage silos before being sent to a mixer. Water and oil are added to make dough. After, the dough passes through a roller which flattens the dough into thin sheets. These sheets are then cut into thin strips with the help of machine. After this stage, the strips are shaped into noodle discs. This are all the stages before the partial cooking stage.

In the following stage, the already prepared noodle discs are dipped into cooking oil and then dried to make them ideal for the upcoming packing process. The partly cooked noodle disc are then placed into individual cups. Next, vegetables and spices are added into cup containing noodle disc. Finally, the cups are sealed and labelled after that and it ready for sold in shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the noodle manufacturing process and provided a clear overview. The response covers all stages from the storage of flour to the final packaging. To reach a higher band, ensure that you avoid listing steps in the introduction; instead, focus on the overall nature of the process. While you have reported the stages, the response would benefit from more explicit comparisons or groupings of the stages (e.g., preparation, cooking, and packaging) to better highlight the flow of the process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression from the beginning to the end of the process. You use some cohesive devices like 'In the following stage' and 'Finally', which help the reader follow the sequence. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'This are all the stages', where the pronoun reference is slightly awkward. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'linear process', 'storage silos', and 'packaging'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'it ready for sold', which should be 'it is ready to be sold'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focus on using more varied verbs and precise nouns related to industrial processes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The manufacturing begins by, flour is stored' (incorrect clause structure) and 'This are all the stages' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'The partly cooked noodle disc are' contains a pluralization error. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
