IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The diagram illustrates the sequential stages involved in the manufacturing process of instant noodles.
It is clear that this is a linear, eight stage production process that being with the final storage of raw flour and culminates in the final labeling and sealing of ready to use noodles cups . The process heavily relies on mechanized automation, shifting from raw bulk ingredients to a packaged consumer product.
In the initial stage, flour is delivered by truck and pumped into large storage silos. Following this, the flour is moved into mixer where it is blended together with water and oil. Once the mixing is complete, the combination is passed dough sheets. These sheets are fed into a cutting. machine that slice then into long dough strips.
In the subsequent phase, the dough strips are molded into circular noodle discs. These discs are then passed though a conveyor belt system to be cooked in oil and dried thoroughly to remove moisture. Afterward, the prepared noodles are placed into individual cups along with separate packets of vegetable and spices. Finally, the packaging phase concludes as the cups are automatically labeled and airtight sealed, making them ready for market distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively covers all stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from the initial delivery of flour to the final packaging. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear, logical overview. The inclusion of an introductory summary and a clear progression through the stages demonstrates a good understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the most significant comparisons or contrasts, such as the transition from raw bulk ingredients to individual consumer units, which you touched upon but could have emphasized further as a key feature of the process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction from the body stages. Cohesive devices such as 'In the initial stage', 'Following this', 'In the subsequent phase', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the process. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the combination' is a good use of a cohesive noun phrase, but ensure that all such references are clearly linked to the preceding sentence to avoid any potential ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a range of vocabulary appropriate for a process description, such as 'sequential stages', 'mechanized automation', 'culminates', and 'airtight sealed'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'passed dough sheets' (should be 'passed through dough sheets') and 'cutting machine that slice then' (should be 'slices them'). These are minor slips that do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise technical collocations related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extruded' or 'processed' where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used passive voice effectively, which is essential for describing a manufacturing process (e.g., 'flour is delivered', 'dough strips are molded'). There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'process that being with' (should be 'begins with') and 'passed dough sheets' (missing preposition). However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. Your control of punctuation is generally good, supporting the clarity of your writing.
