IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The given pictogram illustrates how rapidly noodles are produced. Overall, a total of eight steps of preparing cup noodles starting from flour storage silos to labelling it.
To begin with, this process needs a large quantity of flour so, it is stored in two huge silos. In the second step, water, oil and some addition of flour go through the mixer. After that, the cylindrical rollers roll that blend and turn into the dough sheets. Moreover, the sheets move ahead and go into a cutting machine to form the dough strips.
Furthermore, these strips go through the process where they turn into the noodles discs. After that, the most crucial process takes place where these discs are fried in oil for approximately three minutes and then they need to get dried. In addition, the cups are placed on the belt where the vegetables and spices are poured in the cups with the noodles discs. At the end, these cups are labeled and sealed with the help of a machine. Hence, the instant cup noodles are ready to dispatch.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of flour to the final dispatch. You have identified the main features and provided a clear overview in the introduction. The information is logically sequenced, and the process is described accurately. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the most significant comparisons or features, such as the transition from raw ingredients to the final packaged product, rather than just listing the steps sequentially. Overall, the task is well-addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific stage of the process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'After that', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the sequence. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. While the use of cohesive devices is generally effective, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure further to create a more natural flow between the steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'silos', 'cylindrical rollers', 'dough sheets', and 'dispatch'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'pictogram' (which is not the most precise term for a manufacturing diagram) and 'addition of flour' (which is slightly awkward). However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication. To improve, focus on using more precise technical collocations related to industrial processes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor errors, such as 'labelling it' (which lacks a clear subject/object reference) and 'some addition of flour' (which is grammatically clunky). Punctuation is generally handled well. To achieve a higher score, aim for a greater variety of complex structures, such as using passive voice more consistently to describe the manufacturing process, which is standard for this type of task.
