IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram describes us the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Overall, the process is done in 8 major steps which are discussed in the following.

First of all, the flour is stored in huge storage silos. From here, the required amount of flour is taken to a mixer where it is mixed with oil and water. Once mixing is done, the dough is spreaded on dough sheets via rollers. This dough is now cut in the form of long strips.

After cutting, the strips are shaped as round noodles discs. These discs then move further for cooking and drying. Once drying is done, the process moves to the next step where vegetables and spices are added to these noodles. At this point, the product is ready and we are only left with its packaging.

In the end, these noodles are packed with proper labelling and sealing and now the product is ready to dispatch.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of flour to the final dispatch. The overview is clear, identifying that there are eight major steps. However, the response lacks a comparative element. For instance, it does not highlight the transition from raw materials to the final product or the specific nature of the transformation. While the main features are reported, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band score. To improve, ensure you synthesize the information rather than simply listing the steps in chronological order.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction and a chronological progression through the manufacturing stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different phases of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Once', 'After cutting', and 'In the end' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, the flow is somewhat repetitive, and the transition between sentences could be more sophisticated. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the overall structure remains quite basic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'labelling'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple verbs such as 'done', 'taken', and 'moved'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise collocations that would demonstrate a higher level of control. To improve, try to incorporate more varied vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'processed', 'transformed', 'conveyed', or 'automated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the process is done in 8 major steps' (should be 'consists of') and 'the dough is spreaded' (the past participle of 'spread' is 'spread'). Additionally, the phrase 'describes us' is slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of full control over complex structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types and ensuring correct verb forms will help improve this score.
