IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing of noodles from machinery.

Overall, there are almost eight steps involved for the production of instant noodles from flour. Some important things are also required for this production like cooking oil, vegetables, spices, cups, water and transport.

First of all, storage of silos is very important step after that transfer these flour to factories with the help of trucks or any transport. Secondly, add some amount of water, flour and oil in machine add mix this with help of mixer. Rollers are used to transform these flour mixing to Dough sheets and after this, these sheets are changes into strips. Noodles discs are now ready. But Cooking and drying are also include in these steps before adding this to cups. Furthermore, add some quantity of vegetables and spices in these cups. At the last, labeling and sealing is also required before completing the process of noodles production.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a basic overview of the manufacturing process, but it fails to adequately highlight the main features or make meaningful comparisons. The description is largely a sequential list of steps rather than a summary of the process. While the student identifies the stages, the inclusion of 'important things' like vegetables and spices is somewhat disjointed from the flow of the process. The response lacks a clear, analytical focus on the transformation of the raw materials into the final product. To improve, the student should group the stages logically (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging) and focus on describing the mechanical transformations rather than listing every item mentioned in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into two paragraphs, but the internal structure is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'At the last'. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the paragraphing is not used effectively to separate the different stages of the process. The referencing is occasionally unclear, for example, 'these flour' and 'these sheets', which makes the flow of information feel repetitive and disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would significantly enhance the logical flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. The student relies on simple verbs like 'add', 'mix', and 'change', which do not accurately describe the technical nature of the manufacturing process. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'storage of silos' (the silos are the storage units, not the process) and 'transform these flour mixing to Dough sheets'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise, process-oriented vocabulary such as 'conveyed', 'processed', 'extruded', or 'automated' to better reflect the technical context of the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical errors are frequent. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('these flour mixing to Dough sheets'), article usage ('the manufacturing of noodles from machinery'), and sentence construction ('Cooking and drying are also include in these steps'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. The student needs to focus on basic sentence structure, particularly ensuring that verbs are correctly conjugated and that plural/singular forms are used consistently. More attention to punctuation, especially within long, run-on sentences, would also improve clarity.
