IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given illustration helps us to understand how instant noodles are made in a factory.
There are total of 8 number of processes. The most important ones are mixing water and oil with flour; as well as, cooking and drying the noodles disks. The process involve getting the ingredients for making noodles, passing them through different stages and finally noodles strips are made and packaged.
At the very start, flour is delivered to storage silos. Then, it is passed to a mixer where the flour is mixed with water and oil. In the next stage, the mixture is then passed to rollers which make dough sheets of the given material. Next, these sheets are passed through a machine which converts them into strips.
Then, these strips are converted into discs and then passed to a machine which adds cooking oil to them and also dry them. Afterwards, these dry discs are then passed to another stage where they are placed into cups and vegetables and spices are added to them. Finally, the cups are then properly sealed and labeling, which includes company name; as well as, the ingredients used to make the noodles is placed on the packages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the delivery of flour to the final packaging. You have identified the main features and provided a logical overview of the sequence. However, the task requires a clear summary of the process, and while you have described the steps, you could improve by highlighting the 'main features' more explicitly in the introduction or a dedicated overview paragraph. For instance, noting that the process is entirely automated or identifying the transition from raw materials to a finished product would strengthen the response. Overall, the information is accurate and addresses the prompt well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the start to the end of the manufacturing cycle. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'At the very start', 'Then', 'In the next stage', and 'Afterwards' to guide the reader through the steps. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the introduction from the body paragraphs more distinctly. Some transitions, such as 'as well as', are used slightly awkwardly in terms of punctuation and flow, but the overall arrangement of information remains coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'packaged' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'labeling... is placed', which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, the phrase '8 number of processes' is redundant. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'conveyor belt', 'automated', or 'processed'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'The process involve' should be 'The process involves' (subject-verb agreement), and 'labeling... is placed' is grammatically awkward. There are also some punctuation issues, particularly with the misuse of semicolons in 'company name; as well as, the ingredients'. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable, and the grammatical mistakes do not significantly impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
