IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
THE DIAGRAM ILLUSTRATES THE PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING INSTANT NOODLES.
OVERALL, IT IS A LINEAR PROCESS TO PRODUCE INSTANT NOODLES AND INVOLVES 8 STAGES. IT BEGINS WITH STORING FLOUR, MIXED AND ROLLED TO DOUGH STRIPS TO ADDING VEGETABLES AND SPICES. LASTLY, IT IS LABELLED AND SEALED, READY FOR DELIVERY.
FIRSTLY, FLOUR IS TRANSPORTED IN A TRUCK WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE STORAGE SILOS. THIS IS FURTHER MIXED WITH WATER AND OIL AND TRANSFORMED INTO DOUGH SHEETS WITH THE USE OF ROLLERS. THESE SHEETS ARE INCORPORATED IN THE MACHINE TO FORM DOUGH STRIPS. FURTHERMORE, THE STRIPS ARE CONVERTED INTO A CIRCULAR SHAPE IN THE MACHINE AS NOODLE DISC.
IN ADDITION, COOKING OIL IS USED FOR THE NOODLE DISC TO BE IMMERSED INTO AND THEREAFTER DRIED. MEANWHILE, VEGETABLES AND SPICES ARE ADDED INTO THE CUPS WHERE THESE NOODLES WOULD BE PACKED INTO. THE LAST STAGE INCLUDES THE LABELLING AND SEALING OF THE PRODUCT.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from flour storage to final packaging. The overview is clear and identifies the linear nature of the process. However, the description of the steps is somewhat mechanical and lacks a cohesive flow between the stages. While the main features are reported, the connection between the 'noodle disc' formation and the subsequent cooking stage could be more explicitly linked to the visual data. The response meets the requirements of the task by summarizing the process effectively, though it could benefit from more precise terminology regarding the machinery involved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'thereafter' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions feel slightly forced or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas follows the chronological order of the diagram. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on simple sequential markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'incorporated', 'transformed', and 'manufactured'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'incorporated in the machine' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'noodle disc' (which is a literal description rather than a technical term). The range is sufficient to convey the process, but it lacks the sophistication and precision expected at higher bands. Using more precise verbs related to industrial processes would improve the lexical score significantly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'flour, mixed and rolled to dough strips' (which lacks a clear subject-verb agreement) and 'added into the cups where these noodles would be packed into' (which is slightly redundant). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a process description, but the control over complex sentence construction needs more consistency to ensure accuracy.
