IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The flow chart illustrates the process of instant noodles production.
Overall, it is evident that the process consist of several stages, beginning with the storage units where the flour is kept and culminating with packaging an labelling of noodles.
To begin with, firstly the flour is deposited in grain storages, which is then transported to conveyor belt and then it is mixed with water and oil. The rollers takes the dough to form dough sheets, they are later converted into dough strips. In the fifth step, the dough strips are shaped into circular noodle discs.
Following this, in the sixth stage, these discs are cooked in oil and then dried . Once the drying process is complete, the noodles are placed into individual cups, at which point vegetables and spices are added to the mixture. Finally, the production process concludes in the eight stage, where the cups are labelled and sealed, rendering the instant noodles into distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage of flour to the final labelling and sealing. You have identified the main features and provided a clear overview in the introduction. The information is logically sequenced, and you have successfully highlighted the key steps in the process. To reach a higher band, ensure that you make more explicit comparisons or highlight the transformation of the raw materials more clearly. Overall, the response is accurate and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of steps. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Following this', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed steps. The flow of information is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. To improve, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel in the transition between steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culminating', 'deposited', and 'distribution' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'rendering the instant noodles into distribution', which is slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations related to industrial processes would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the process consist', 'the rollers takes') and minor punctuation errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Ensure you proofread for basic agreement and pluralization errors. Strengthening your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.
