IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates how instant noodles are prepared in a factory.
Overall , the process is simple and uses heavy machinery to prepare the noodles. It all starts from the raw flour and mixed with oil + water to prepare the dough and then mixed with vegetables and spices before packaging.
The flour has been brought in the factory as the necessary ingredient and then put it in the mixer with the other two common ingredients oil and water , the raw flour has been transformed into dough sheets , the fourth step is to prepare the dough strips and that later become into noodles discs.
The noodles disc get dried with some cooking oil. Then the noodles get filled in the cups and the seventh step is to add some vegetables and spices and the eighth and last step is to label and seal the cups and that's how everyone's favourite instant noodles come into existence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from raw ingredients to the final packaging. However, the description is somewhat simplistic and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the process flow. While the main features are identified, the response relies heavily on a step-by-step listing rather than synthesizing the information into a cohesive report. The inclusion of 'everyone's favourite' is subjective and inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective tone. To improve, focus on grouping the stages logically (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging) and ensure the overview highlights the transformation of the product rather than just listing steps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'the fourth step is' and 'the seventh step is' make the writing feel like a list rather than a fluid report. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect the stages of the process. To improve, use a wider variety of transition signals such as 'subsequently', 'following this', 'once the dough has been formed', and 'thereafter' to create a more natural flow between the different stages of the manufacturing cycle.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'brought in the factory' and 'come into existence' are slightly unnatural in this context. There is limited use of less common lexical items related to industrial processes. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise technical vocabulary such as 'raw materials', 'processed', 'extruded', 'dehydrated', or 'automated'. Avoid informal or conversational language like 'everyone's favourite', as this is not suitable for an academic report. Focusing on accurate collocations related to manufacturing will significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'The flour has been brought in the factory' should be 'The flour is brought into the factory' (present tense for processes). There are also issues with punctuation and sentence construction, such as 'mixed with oil + water' (avoid symbols) and 'the noodles disc get dried' (subject-verb agreement). The use of the passive voice is attempted, which is appropriate for process descriptions, but it needs to be applied more consistently and accurately throughout the text to improve clarity and grammatical control.
