IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles.

Overall, the whole procedure requires 8 different steps, from making the main dough, shaping, and packaging, in order to end up with a properly labelled instant noodles cup.

In more detail, the precess begins with putting flour in the mixer, which is pre-stored in storage silos. water and oil will be added next to the mixer, that is attached to rollers, rolling the dough out and passing it through machine in which it will be cut into thin stripes.

Furthermore, the dough stripes are shaped into noodles discs that will fried in oil then dried. The latter is distributed into paper cups, with some added vegetables and spices. The output passes through another machine that works on properly sealing and labelling the cups. The final product is ready to go after these 8 crucial steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from raw materials to the final packaged product. However, it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the overview is clear and the sequence is logical, the description lacks detail in certain areas, such as the specific temperatures or the duration of the drying process, which are often key features in such diagrams. To improve, ensure you expand on the descriptions of each stage to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive summary of the process flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the process. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'The latter' helps to connect ideas. However, the progression is slightly mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a process description, but the overall flow would benefit from more varied linking words to guide the reader through the stages of the manufacturing cycle more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'procedure', and 'distributed'. There are some minor errors, such as 'precess' (a spelling error) and 'stripes' instead of 'strips'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and ensure careful proofreading to avoid simple spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'which is pre-stored' (referring to flour, but the phrasing is slightly awkward) and 'that is attached to rollers, rolling the dough out'. The sentence 'water and oil will be added next to the mixer, that is attached to rollers' contains a punctuation error regarding the relative clause. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for better control over complex sentence construction and punctuation.
