Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 85 words. This significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While the student identifies the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, the lack of length means that the overview is incomplete and the description of the process is rushed. There is no attempt to provide a meaningful summary or highlight key comparisons, which are essential for a Task 1 response. The response is severely underdeveloped and fails to address all parts of the task effectively due to its brevity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into a single paragraph, which is insufficient for a report. While there is a basic attempt at logical sequencing using transition words like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', the flow is mechanical. The use of 'In contrast' is inappropriate here, as the final step of the process is not a contrast to the previous steps. The lack of a clear introduction and a proper overview paragraph makes the structure feel disjointed and incomplete. The response lacks the necessary paragraphing to guide the reader through the process effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Words like 'flour', 'mixer', and 'noodles' are used repeatedly without variation. There is little evidence of a range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process. Some word choices are imprecise, such as 'dried the oil', which does not accurately describe the industrial process of removing oil. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. To improve, the student should focus on using more specific process-related verbs and nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'Flour are stored' and 'Flours are mixed'. The sentence structure is simplistic, relying heavily on basic 'subject-verb-object' patterns. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which limits the grammatical range. Punctuation is also problematic, with comma splices occurring (e.g., 'Flour are stored in the storage silos, it is shifted to the mixer'). These errors, while not always impeding communication, are frequent enough to demonstrate a lack of control over complex grammar.
