Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles step by step.

Overall, the process contains 8 steps to make instant noodles. Initial step begins with storing silos and ends with labelling and sealing.

First, silos are stored in a container after that it is sent for mixing with water and oil. when it is mixed properly it turns into rollers and goes through dough sheets. In the fourth step dough sheets are turned into dough strips. In the fifth stage those dough strips are turned into noodles discs.

After making noodles disc, it is cooked with oil, when it is properly cooked it goes for drying. In the seventh step those cooked noodles are put into cups, in addition vegetables and spices are added in the same cups. When the seventh steps are complete it goes for the eight step, which is labelling and sealing. In this step, when vegetables and spices are added, it is properly labelled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from storage to sealing. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview of the process as a whole, such as noting that it is a linear, multi-stage industrial procedure. While the main features are identified, the analysis is quite basic. For instance, the transition from 'dough sheets' to 'dough strips' and then 'noodle discs' is mentioned, but the technical nature of the process could be better highlighted. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the transformation from raw ingredients to the final packaged product more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'After making', and 'In addition' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are repetitive or slightly awkward, such as 'When the seventh steps are complete it goes for the eight step'. The referencing is sometimes unclear; for example, 'silos are stored in a container' is inaccurate as silos are the storage containers themselves. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring precise referencing would enhance the flow and coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision expected at higher bands. Phrases like 'turns into rollers' are technically inaccurate, as the dough passes through rollers rather than becoming them. There is also some repetition of basic verbs like 'turned into' and 'added'. To reach a higher band, you should use more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing, such as 'processed', 'extruded', 'cut', or 'dehydrated'. Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more specific process-related verbs will significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Initial step begins with storing silos' (missing articles) and 'when it is mixed properly it turns into rollers' (incorrect preposition/verb usage). Additionally, there are punctuation issues and minor subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'the seventh steps are complete'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the process, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on article usage and sentence variety will help improve your grammatical control.
