IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the various stages involved in the manufacturing of instant noodles.
Overall, the process starts with the storage silos for storing the flour and ends with the labeling and sealing stage. The manufacturing process involves stages such as mixing, pressing through rollers, giving discs shape to noodles, cooking and drying, and storing in cups.
Starting with the initial stages, flour in being stored at the storage silos, which are the large containers. This flour is then transported to a mixer, where it is mixed with water and oil. It then passes to another stage where it undergoes the rollers before creating the dough sheets. Once the dough sheets are created, they are then converted into dough strips through a machine. After that an individual disc shape is given to these strips.
In the remaining stages, these disc-shaped noodles undergo the cooking process through oil before drying them. Once these noodles are dried up, they are further packed into cups by adding vegetables and spices. Furthermore, these cups are sealed and labelled according to different categories.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process and provided a clear overview. You covered the process from the initial storage of flour to the final labeling and sealing. The information is logically presented, and you have included all key steps such as mixing, rolling, shaping, cooking, and packaging. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more explicit comparisons or highlight the transformation of the product more dynamically. For instance, you could emphasize the transition from raw ingredients to the final packaged product more effectively to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the process flow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is well-organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You use cohesive devices such as 'Starting with', 'Once', 'After that', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the stages. The progression is logical and easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid repetitive sentence structures. While the paragraphing is appropriate, ensure that the transition between the initial preparation stages and the final packaging stages is even smoother to enhance the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, such as 'manufacturing', 'transported', 'converted', and 'categories'. The terminology is generally accurate and appropriate for a process description. However, there are some instances where the word choice could be more precise or sophisticated. For example, 'giving discs shape to noodles' is slightly awkward; 'forming the noodles into discs' would be more natural. Expanding your range of process-related verbs and nouns would help elevate your score. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'flour in being stored' (should be 'flour is stored') and 'undergoes the rollers' (should be 'passes through the rollers'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the process. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing industrial processes. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
