IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided process depicts the steps involved in the procedure of the noodles manufacturing.

overall, the manufacturing process consists of total eight steps, where it began from storage silos and end on the labelling and sealing of the cups.

In the initial step, the flour is transported from storage silos to the site of the manufacturing of noodles. Secondly, the transported flour is being mixed with two ingredients, water and oil in the machine. After that, the flour converts into the dough sheets by the rollers and these sheets transform into dough strips with the help of further roller inserted for this task. Thereafter, the dough strips are turned into the noodles discs and move automatically with the machines. Afterwards, these noodles discs mixed with cooking oil and then it let for being dry. Then these discs are packed into the cups by putting vegetables and spices . Finally the cups are labeled and seal properly in the machines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the storage silos to the final sealing. The overview is present, though it is slightly mechanical in its description of the steps. While the main features are identified, the response lacks a more analytical approach to the process, such as grouping the stages into logical phases (e.g., preparation, processing, and packaging). The description is accurate, but it could be improved by highlighting the transformation of the raw materials more clearly. Overall, it addresses the requirements of the task adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Cohesive devices such as 'In the initial step', 'Secondly', 'After that', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire response is written as a single block of text, which hinders the visual clarity of the report. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the flow between some sentences feels slightly repetitive due to the reliance on simple transition words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using process-specific terms like 'storage silos', 'dough sheets', and 'dough strips'. However, there is a lack of variety and precision. Phrases like 'let for being dry' are awkward and unnatural. The student relies on basic verbs such as 'mixed', 'turned', and 'packed'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'extruded', 'conveyed', or 'dehydrated', and improve collocations to sound more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'it began from storage silos and end on' contains tense inconsistency. 'These noodles discs mixed with cooking oil' is missing a passive auxiliary verb ('are mixed'). Additionally, 'it let for being dry' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures and verb forms.
