IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the given diagram below it is evaluated that the process of production of noodles starts with collecting flour from storage facilities and delivered to the processing unit.

After the collection of raw material, water and oil is mixed in the flour and it is kneaded using a mixer until the desired consistency is obtained. Later, this mixed dough is compressed into thin sheets and also cut down into strips. This process continues where then the strips are rolled into a disc-like shape and the noodles take its orignal shape. Further, these discs are fried in oil to give it a stiff and cooked form and it is dried so that all oil is extracted. Then, the noodles are transferred to packing section where they are packed in cups with its flavoured spices and vegetables. The final step is sealing and labeling the cups, by that instant noodles are ready.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from raw material collection to final packaging. However, it lacks an overview or summary of the process, which is a key requirement for Task 1. The description is purely sequential, and there is no attempt to highlight significant features or make comparisons. The response would benefit from an introductory sentence that outlines the overall nature of the process (e.g., a multi-stage industrial cycle). While all steps are mentioned, the lack of a clear overview and the absence of a concluding summary of the main trend or purpose limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically sequenced, following the steps of the diagram chronologically. Cohesive devices such as 'After', 'Later', 'Further', and 'Then' are used to guide the reader through the process. However, the text is presented as a single block paragraph, which makes it less readable. Paragraphing is a requirement for higher bands; splitting the text into an introduction, a body paragraph for the initial stages, and a body paragraph for the final stages would significantly improve the structure. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow could be improved with more varied transition signals.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'processing unit', 'consistency', 'compressed', and 'extracted'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'take its orignal shape' (should be 'original') and 'packing section' (should be 'packaging section'). The range is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the more sophisticated, precise terminology often expected for higher bands, such as 'automated', 'conveyor belt', or 'subsequent'. The spelling error 'orignal' is a minor slip that does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'water and oil is mixed' (subject-verb agreement: should be 'are mixed') and 'by that instant noodles are ready' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is somewhat repetitive. While the meaning is clear throughout, the frequency of minor errors in agreement and phrasing prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using more varied sentence starters to avoid a repetitive 'Then... Then...' structure.
