IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The drawing represents how instant noodles are manufactured.

Overall, it can be seen from the diagram that there are 8 major steps involved in the making of instant noodles. Starting from the mixture of flour with water and oil to the drying and then labelling and sealing stage.

In the initial stage, a truck carrying flour offloads into storage silos. Then, flours from this silos are taken to the mixer, where water and oil are added and mixed together with the flour. The mixture is then expelled onto dough sheets that flattens it. Next, the mixture goes to the dough strips that turns the flattened mixture into strands of noodles.

In the subsequent stage, the content from the dough strips gets to the noodles disc. The noodles discs is then cooked in an oil and allowed to dry. In the next stage, the dried noodles are places in cups and vegetables and spices are added inside the cup of noodles. Next, the cups are then labelled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all stages of the manufacturing process, from the delivery of raw materials to the final packaging. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a logical overview. However, the description could be improved by focusing more on the 'comparison' aspect of the task; for instance, noting the transition from raw ingredients to a finished product. While the process is clear, the summary of the steps is slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends or stages rather than just listing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. You use transition signals such as 'In the initial stage', 'Next', and 'In the subsequent stage' to guide the reader. However, some of the cohesive devices feel a bit repetitive or mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'dough strips' and the 'noodles disc' could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a process description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'storage silos', 'expelled', and 'manufactured'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'dough strips that turns' (should be 'turn') and 'noodles discs is' (should be 'discs are'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise terminology that would characterize a higher band. Expanding your range to include more varied verbs and nouns related to industrial processes would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that slightly distract the reader, such as subject-verb agreement issues: 'flours from this silos are' (should be 'these silos is') and 'the noodles discs is then cooked' (should be 'discs are'). Additionally, 'the mixture goes to the dough strips that turns' contains a relative clause error. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for singular/plural agreement would improve your accuracy.
