IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles, which involves eight steps.

Overall, the process begins with storage silos of flour and concluded with labelling and sealing of the product.

The process commences with storage silos of flour. Following this, the flour is added with oil and water into mixer to mix it property. And this process forms dough. Then with the help of rollers, the dough is converted into dough sheets. Further, those dough stripes are cut into stripes, forming dough stripes.

Further more, those dough stripes are poured into noodle disc’s. Sequentially, the process continues with cooking and drying of those stripes in noodle disc’s . Vegetables and spices are added into those noodle cups. After this, the noodle cups are labelled. Moreover, those cups are sealed properly after labelling. And that was the final step of manufacturing instant noodles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main stages of the noodle manufacturing process, from flour storage to sealing. However, it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the overview is present, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear comparison or synthesis of the stages. The explanation of the steps is accurate, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a full development of the task. To improve, ensure all steps are described with more detail and aim to exceed the word count to allow for a more comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical, with frequent use of 'Further', 'Moreover', and 'And'. The transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the repetitive use of 'those' to refer to previous steps. While there is a clear overall progression, the lack of variety in linking words and the somewhat simplistic structure of the paragraphs limit the score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. There are some errors in word choice and form, such as 'noodle disc’s' (should be 'discs') and 'property' (likely meant 'properly'). The vocabulary is largely restricted to the terms provided in the diagram, with little attempt to use more sophisticated or varied synonyms to describe the manufacturing process. To improve, focus on using a wider range of technical and descriptive vocabulary related to industrial processes and ensure correct word forms are used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'the flour is added with oil and water into mixer' (missing articles), 'noodle disc’s' (incorrect apostrophe usage), and 'And that was the final step' (inappropriate tense shift). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on article usage, consistent verb tenses throughout the report, and correct punctuation, particularly regarding pluralization and possessives.
